Looks like yours is very low to the ground. Did you use drop axles? Does it have springs on it or is it a rigid trailer?

He said one @ a time is expensive & it was cheaper to buy.
Steel has gone down a bit...but the above is 100% correct. Unless you dont put any value on your sweat equity...its cheaper to buy one. Look for one a couple of years old but with brakes on BOTH axles (its the law now) and it will be WAY WAY cheaper in the long run. I have 2 eqipment type trailers and a car trailer and I have paid between $650 and $1200 for each one and thay are all nice. I did have to replace some lights and put a brake away box on all of them (its the law now also) but I still came out way ahead in the long run!

With that said...if the steel, power for the welder and you consider your sweat equity FREE...than it may be cheaper to build one!

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

I dont consider my time free. The point to all this is i want to build a trailer for myself for the fact is then i can say Yep i built that. Yep those custom touches are all mine. I have the main rails for it. I can get steel cheap (friend on the inside) And i can do it in stages.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

You need to find one at a dealer that you like and get the best price. Then compare that to one you want to build. I helped my uncle build several trailers over the years. The only reason we built them was to make them stronger and customize them the way we want. We would over build them which makes them stronger but also makes them heavier. The weight adds up fast so do your math to figure your axles out. We put two 6000lbs axles under his hydraulic tilt trailer but had it registered for 10,000lbs or you need to have it inspected twice yearly. But we would usually build two at a time and in the end it isn't much cheaper. There is a lot of work involved, cut and welding metal, paint, wiring and lights, axles, wood for the floor, tie downs and the hassle of getting a title.

We would use channel for everything.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

Mr. Beast, My uncle and buddy's have three total hydraulic tilt trailers like the one you want built. Theirs have a 19ft deck and removable fenders which came in handy several times. These are nice trailers and you will love it.

I think so, I have wanted to build one of these for a long time, it is actually a variation of the trailers my dad used to have, he had 2 tilt decks, unfortunately his guys beat them to death, but that is the way it goes. I am also working on a design for a 40' tilt deck goose neck. It would have triple axles on it and everything, but would require a much larger ram to tilt. and a pony motor, and that gets expensive fast.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

i have a trailer i built about 15 years ago, get alot of comments on it and it is " overbuilt" used to use mobile home axles on it and that will do but not very nice. in my opinion, the best thing would be 5k tandem with both being brake axles. maybe use the mobile home axles just not the spindles, the tube is 5k - 8k axle rated and weld your own hubs on . the frame i used is mobile home I beam. i cut 12" I beam in half and made 6" I beam double thickness out of it welded front and back pattern , then took the same I beam and made 4" double thickness for the toungue all the way to the front axle. hate to toot my own horn but i have never seen a trailer quite like it and have loaded 14k plus on it and it did not even phase it. I plan on building a new one the same way only 24' or so , with a goosneck. IT IS TWO TITTY TUFF guaranteed

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

Hey MrBeast that drawing looks like my trailer, but mine has an 18' deck. 16' in my opinion just isn't long enough. I didn't build it, but it is titled. Has 3500lb axles, electric brakes on both axles. ramps set in there spot of the back. The way I load, is basically pull the pin, drive or winch the vechicle on the ramps as it rolls up it pushes down and tilts the trailer and then eases itself right back down. Neat set up.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

Here's a trailer i built. The axles are from a 5th wheel camper trailer, just made them wider to fit my need. 6in channel for the main frame and 3in channel for stringers. 1/8 tread plate 5x10 sheets(very heavy). 20 ft floor with 2 ft dovetail. Fenders are made out of same tread plate. Has hauled anything i've wanted. Also ran some angle down the length of trailer where the tire's run. Could have bought one, but wanted to make my own. Also added a toolbox in the floor up front. ""

I'll buy or build a 40' goose neck trailer in a few years. That'll be one long sucker behind a crew cab dually.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

For all the guys that have built your own trailers. I have a couple questions. I am wanting my trailer to be 20 ft long.

How long does the tongue need to be?
What is the IDEAL placement for axles?

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

On the axles, i was told to use the 60/40 method. On the length of the tongue, i'm not sure.

To clarify, The 60/40 rule would be to put 60% of the weight on the tires, and and 40% on the tongue.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

Hey guys I also subscribe to a lot of your thinking on these posts. I build and fix things, that's what I do, and it's how I relax. To me it's very rewarding to say "I built it myself."
Like a lot of you I over engineer stuff but I can garuntee it won't break!
I agree with the 5K axles as well. I have my 5" channel for my 18 footer all cut up and it's just waiting for shop space. It will be pulled by my 71 C30 I am building now.
Imacarguytoo,
the length from your axle center line to your ball should be at least twice the tread width. Otherwise you'll have it doing the watoosie behind you down the road.

Re: Any home made car trailers here?

I just bought a 20' hydraulic tilt deck aluminum trailer from H&H Trailer.
1600 pounds empty and a 12k gross rating.
It has an electric hydraulic power pack, so tilting the trailer up takes about 10 seconds of pushing a button. Load up and then hydraulic power down takes another 10 seconds. Tie down and go!
