Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

the thing that blows, I have a BUNCH of factory letters from GMC headquarters... all kinds of off the wall info.... NOTHING about this. I bought it thinking I might get lucky and get some 8.5 foot fleet bed info on the GMC. Notta dang thing.

nope. no 4X4 longhorns ever built from GM. There's been a few custom home builts pop up from time to time though.

I always wondered why there werent any offered, not really that hard, since most the drivetrain issues were up front.

Not to undo anybody but my GMC Longhorn has Custom Camper on both doors and my glove box sticker reflects the option.
The Longhorn badges were in different spots for 1968. Correct me if I am wrong, They were mounted on the Chevy's above the rear side bed, red lamps. 1969-72 the badges were mounted on the rear sides bed in front of the side red markers. My Sierra Grande badges mount just like the 69-72 badges.
Andy will tell ya that allot of GMC information was lost by GM and allot of things are not known for sure, but Andy will tell you what he can and you can reference his Longhorn web sight that is in his postings all over this websight. I hope this helps you some. Andy educated me on my truck. Enjoy the Longhorn.

Will you please post pics the door emblems and the one on your glove box?

Becouse the frame is off a one ton, and there was no one ton 4X4 trucks built till the 73 - 87 generation.
It would require a whole new front the way GM did it.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

CCCC,is your truck an original paint Chevy Longhorn with no 1/4 panel script?
I`d like to know if all 133" GMC pickups with the Custom Camper option had the door script. What if it was a Sierra or Sierra Grande with the Custom Camper option?Would the fender badge say Custom Camper or Sierra/Grande?Would the rear 1/4 script be used with a Custom Camper fender badge?Or Sierra/Grande fender badge and Custom Camper door script?I`ve had Cheyenne Chevys with CustomCamper option (badge is seperate option) that had no Cheyenne badging.I`ve had Cheyenne Supers with Custom Camper option (no Custom Camper badge optioned) that had the Cheyenne Super fender badge and Custom Camper door scripts.
I ask because I have a pair of GMC 3500 Custom Camper fender badges.I guess these sre what you`d get if fender badge was optioned.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

CCCC's longhorn badges probably fell off. On my one ton which had original paint when i got it, you couldn't even see where the badge was on one side, but the other side had faint glue lines where the script badge was.

On Special K's comment...
I have seen 2 GMC trucks... one restored, one low mileage survivor that were both Sierra Grande, neither had the custom camper option package, but both listed the custom camper script on the doors.

As far as the chevys... that's interesting the way you've seen those... in 69&70 custom camper fender badge was supposed toreplace the CST if they were both ordered on the same truck, but I was under the impression (and not sure) that the door script was used in 72, (like the GMC) and the 71 was only on the fender if there was no trim package.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

On the`71 truck the Custom Camper name plate was listed as an option as well as Custom Sport Truck, which made it a Cheyenne. So,it said CustomCamper/20 on the fender and that`s it.

You know? The option is listed as Z81 Custom Camper Nameplate:Minimum tires required.Only available when...and lists all the things included in the package(front stabilizer,hd shocks/springs...).Seems wierd just for an emblem.

I think if a truck says it has the Custom Camper emblem option then it`s a Custom Camper. It`s just listed funny.Custom Camper isn`t listed as a model. It was available on any level. So,they listed it kinda backwards from the emblem back to the equipment that would make it such a thang.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

Spec.K while we're on the subject, I have a 1968 Kelly Blue Book that says " H.D. Camper Equipt. includes H.D. Tires, H.D. Springs and Split Rims."
I don't see much mention of split rims in the liturature, but my Custom Camper came with them.
Also of note, and more on topic I guess, is the fact that the Blue Book does not list a 8.5' bed for GMC in 1968, only Chevy. I wonder if any members have seen one.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

Hmmm...can`t say about a`68 GMC 133 incher. The tire requirements allowed tires in both design rims.Kelley isn`t always accurate.16" was the norm with 16.5 "clinchers" coming in as wide track tires.I guess the standard tire was "C'" rated and "D" rated was the minimum.

Re: GMC & Chevy Longhorns

My 71 doesn't have door emblems, but the previous owner removed most of the trim on the cab so I can't be sure if it had emblems or not. Here's some pics and the SPID in case you're curious. This is the one ton GMC 133 wheelbase.

To post your photos, go to picturetrail.com and sign up for a free account. Upload some pics, and then go to the image URLs page and you can cut and paste from there.
