I too, have an SM420 with a 292. I'm going to swap in 307 gears to alleviate my freeway woes. May keep the granny-tranny though...

A tip for the time being (and forgive me if you know this)--

If you want first gear while you're rolling, you've got to match your actual road-speed to your engine rpm. In other words, put the truck in neutral, bring up the rpm, and slip the tranny into first. Double-clutch, of course, though after some practice you can quit using the clutch all together.

That technique will help you get into first a bit easier, though it won't change how low that gear is, or how useless it tends to be for street driving!

I just picked one up from a IROC at Tigard U-pull-it for $75.. Its in perfect shape.
