I bought a new flarestat flasher for a fairly reasonable price from a local truck supply shop...not custom trucks...commercial. It looks like the originals. I have also seen the originals on ebay with the bowtie or gmc emblem on the red knob, but always found them pricey for not being guaranteed to work. Flarestat is the company name if you want to find them online.

Here is mine...

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

Tthornt,

I have the 1960 Passenger car and truck accessory installation referance manual, (Printed 1959). This book explains with text and pictures the installation process to 99% of everything on our trucks.

Pages 345-348 explain how to install the "Traffic Hazard Lamp Switch and Flasher" . In my 1960 GMC accessory brochure they offer it as a factory option. See pic. Do you need a copy of the pages? I can copy and mail to you.

I knew you'd ask that. I think two wires tapped the right turn signal lights and two tapped the left turn signals, but would have to go back and look to be sure.It had a hot wire with an inline fuse that I tapped to a hot side of the fuse panel.

Federal law mandated reverse lights in 1966 on trucks, but reverse lights were available as an R.P.O. (Regular Production Option) on the '60-'65 trucks, both stepsides and fleetsides.

I think that is where I found them and called them. They referred me to a dealer three miles away. Might be worth a try. If not, and you need to get one, let me know and I'll check back with this local place and see how much they are now. I don't remember it being much.

I sent them an email...

I frequent a classic truck board. I bought one of your flasher units...model 127 from a local dealer in Evansville, IN. One of the site members is looking for a dealer in the Greenville, SC area. Can you provide that and I'll pass it on?

Thanks,

Robert Dale
Evansville, IN

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

oh yeah, i got pic will be uploading.
I was able to use the hazard switch on the column. as your know, i traced N cut the brown wire after the steering wheel plug. I connected one wire from the two wire hazard plug to the brown wire coming from hazard switch and connected the other wire (from the two wire hazard plug) to always hot 15 amp fuse on the fuse box.

You can also buy those on E bay. Search Signal Stat and you will see them come up fairly often.

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

I have a 62 fleetside and it has reverse lights, is it possible that they came with the truck as an option, or is it only possible that the box is off of a 66?
Cheers

60-65 BackUp lights were an option, 66 they were government mandated

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

Is there any way to tell if a '62 truck actually came with the backup lights or not? Also, do they look exactly like the ones that were mandated in '66?
In other words, I was thinking of filling in the back-up lights because I thought that they were wrong for the year, but maybe I should leave them if they were in fact an option. What do you guys think?

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

The backup lights were the same for all years, the only difference being between the ones for a stepside and the ones for a fleetside. It's your truck, your preference, on whether or not to keep them. I intend to run them on mine (if I ever get that far) and possibly run a brighter light setup for it too.

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

ol Curt,

I scored a Flarestat (#127) flasher assembly at the local Fleet Pride truck supply store you found to be a source. Just took me awhile to get by there. They had to get it from another store but just took 2 days. It was $44. It seems to be identical to the original ones that were optional on our trucks as you said. It is amazing that they are still making them like that 45 years later. It doesn't come with a steering column connector of course.

Thanks for your help.

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

Although nice, that is not exactly like the originals for our trucks. The originals were Signalstat Model 105 Flare-Stat and they look like this with the exception of the text on the lighted pull-knob. The Chevy model has three bowties around the perimeter of the lighted pull-knob and the GMC model has three GMC's around the perimeter of the lighted pull-knob.

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

Hey Tony,

Yep I see the differences in the bracket and knob.

The new one says SIGNAL-STAT FLARESTAT MODEL NO. ____ (blank on mine). Still made in the USA. They have extended the side casting enough to mount the flasher socket to it instead of leaving it loose. The instructions say for all 1958-1965 model year vehicles.

Not being a purist, it is close enough for use.

Re: 1962 chevy c10 hazard lights

I was wondering if mine on the 66 are working correctly. To get the hazzards to come on I have to have the key on and turn on one of the turnsignals. Then the flashers work. But at least they still work, kind of.
