Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

I know this is an old thread but I love blue dots so much that I had to post a pic! I'm going to make a short video soon to show everyone how they look at night.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

Here's an old pic of a 56 chevy with blue dots. Gives you an idea of the glow they give off. You don't actually see any "blue" light. You just get that purple glow, and they make the taillight itself appear brighter and makes them stand out and grab your attention.

Ever since I was a kid, I would get excited everytime I saw a car with them. So cool.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

I have them on my 70 c10..but I blacked them out on the inside so they don't "glow". Probably would still give them "cause" in my state of Ohio..

How do you attach those to the taillights?

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

I also had mine covered on the inside with electrical tape so they wouldn't light up. I just took the tape off and I'm going to make a short video Sunday night of the difference between stock and glass blue dot. The glass ones make the lights look even better. The plastic lens ones don't work as well.

Blue dots are installed by drilling a 15/16" hole in your tail light lens with a hole saw. The lens is them placed in the hole and held in place with the chrome trim ring and twisty tabs. I usually seal mine with clean silicone neatly to make it water tight. The lens is supposed to be placed directly in front of the brake light bulb for maximum effect.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

You know, all the state regs listed say "A red light". Not a specific color of red. In my thinkin, that purplish glow is "a" color of red. Judge might not agree of coarse. Bluish red eh?

I totally agree. You don't see any "blue light" from the rear. Changes the tail lights to a more distinct lighter shade of red. Depending on the size of your actual tail light, some will me more pink than others. Unless the law specifically says no "blue dots" then technically they aren't illegal. There is nothing in the motor vehicle act stating that red has to be exact THIS certain shade of red. Where I live it just says "no blue light". Well u can't see any "blue light". I don't see the issue anyways. They grab your attention and that's a good thing. Especially on older cars with dim small tail lights. I think it makes things safer.

Some people say that blue dots make your tail lights harder to see in the daylight. Not true. I took my truck out today and played around with one side blue dot covered up. The side with the blue dot appeared brighter in all lighting conditions. With all the blue HID headlights and super white LED lighting out these days, I don't think blue dots are that big of a deal. Cops are used to seeing all sorts of different colored headlights and stuff these days. Blue dots prob don't stand out as much as they used to.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

The amount of purple in the brake light obviously depends on the size of the red tail light in comparison to the 1" diameter blue dot. That 56 chevy I posted has pretty small tail lights and so the brake lights will appear more purple than ours will. I tried taking a video and that didnt work, so I snapped some pics. There is a bit of color difference but the main difference is the brightness of the brake lights. See for yourself. Blue dot tail light lens on the right. Stock lens on the left.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

Safety factor? I say "positive" improvement. I'm keeping them. Legal or not I don't care. They make my brake lights twice as bright.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

One more pic. Closer up. Huge difference in brightness. I did the same sort of test the other day in the afternoon sun. They are also brighter during the daytime. Sorry I might be boring most of you with this, but its been an ongoing debate about safety on a lot of forums. I, just trying to show some facts. Hard to find any actual pictures online of how they actually look.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

Figure out where they should be located. Get behind the truck at night with a sharpie or a other felt pen and turn on the hazards. Then go back about 50 feet and have a look where the bulb illuminates the actual tail light lens. Walk to the truck and mark the lens right over top of the bulb for max effect. Then you take a 15/16" hole saw and start drilling. Stick the lens in and twist the little tabs with some pliers. Done. Reinstall lenses.

Re: Blue Dot Tail lights...

I actually got pulled over once up here in MI because of my blue dots. This was 15 or 20 years ago. I really think the officer just wanted to check out my truck though. Of course he had to explain to me that they were not legal, but they always used to do it when he was young too.... yada, yada, yada.... no ticket, just a nice truck and off I go. So, yeah they are 'illegal' but you'd have to find an officer in a really bad mood to give you a ticket just cause of them.
