Re: Long to short conversion
It's a 69 as well, the rear end is a big dana 60 with the full floating spindel that hangs out about five inches. Great if your hauling stuff but lame if your looking for sporty wheels. The wheels I want are five lug and since I am going to convert to disc anyway I figured I should put the wheels I want on too. I will look into that conversion spindel, that would save time and money.

Re: Long to short conversion
on friday i picked up my billet insert for phantom grill. it is so nice i cannot wait to see what it is going to look like, but i will have to wait. a friend of mine is going to help me, we are planning on working on it one week from today. we have to cut the outer grill shell and install the inner piece. i did some bondo work this weekend. i hate doing it but do not have the money to pay someone so i do what i can, it sure is slow and tough to stay motivated sometimes. anyway happy easter to all you chevy enthusiasts.

Re: Long to short conversion
My work has been getting busier (HVAC) as we are getting into the heat. Good but i have not been working on truck as much as I would like. I picked up a muncie 4 speed with shifter about two weeks ago. Talked to Brothers truck and my SS bed strips came in I will pick them up on Sat. Mike, yes the fab for the grill was alot. Of course you have to cut the outer grill and i searched and searched and the only place i could find the grill insert was carriage works and you do not have to fab the insert just install. I think the outer grill you get makes a big difference (not all aftermarket products are great). Of course you have to recess your headlights (a bit of a pain), what i did not know is you have to cut both of your front fenders for clearance of the insert and my fir is still not great. But if you wonder if it is worth it just type in phantom grill into this website, there is a forum that has a red truck and a black truck.

Re: Long to short conversion
thanks ben, the first two pics are of the raw metal used as the base and the floor of the bed, the thisrd is the SS bed strips with no bolts, they took like four months to get in but worth the wait. they are made by mar-k but i get a deal through brothers trucks (even though it took so long john and the guys at brothers in corona are awesome). get some more pics soon. hope you all have an awesome 4th

Re: Long to short conversion
Nice build! I have the following fill in the bed of my '56. i have seen others use this as well. some use a trap door in the bed floor that looks slick as well. checkout member sactojim build thread he has a awesome truck with a flip door in the bed. Jims build thread:

Re: Long to short conversion
Got a new laptop, trying to upload photos from photobucket. If this works this is an old photo of the rear notch. Frame was upside down on jackstands and just painted after notch was finished. Did not want to buy a kit so my notch is custom (he he) redneck custom one side does not match the other. We bought raw metal from metal yard, cut out section, cut pieces to fit, welded and painted.

Re: Long to short conversion
hey nice work! i was looking at your lower cup replacement and noticed you did yours like mine (using the whole piece). how hard was it for yours to line up? mine was a huge major pain in the ass to get right. the contours from the cup wasnt even close to my fender. i had to basically pinch the new cup into contour with my fender lines, if that makes any sense. now its hard to get the filler sanded down in that curve.

Re: Long to short conversion
Making a little progress. Trying to put all the parts back on to finish up body work. Had to put the whole front end together to fit the grill. Grill is cool but had to recess my lights a secong time because they hit the billet insert(grill was a lot of work). all metal fab is done but i am mad at a local harley dealer. I ordered a gas cap that is usually in stock, said it would be in about a week. Called, today back ordered till mid-november. Not sure what i am going to do yet, they fuel fill is the last real fab needed before paint.

Re: Long to short conversion
Sorry to hear about the fuel filler. Looks like a ton of work on the phantom grille but I know it'll get you the look you're going for when finished.

Re: Long to short conversion
Went to the harley dealer. Over the phone they said if they had a kit that has the fuel cap that i want with a gauge they could break the kit and give me my cap, (but they did not have any-they had two when i was there a week ago). I went yesterday and they broke the kit so i got my cap. I will start on the work today. Hope to have some pics soon.
