Re: Midnight Rider, my 61

today I finished up on the trans tunnel.I didn't fair it out with body filler because its going to be covered up;it's good enough for the floor.A word of advice to the ones trying to weld panels(I,m sure you veterans are going to love this);definatly use new wire, and not the stuff that comes with the welder!I ran out of the wire that came with the welder and changed it out to some Radnor 30 guage I had bought and the results were PHENOMINAL!As luck would have it I was darn near finished with my welding.Thenext piece of advice would be to always use some sort of backer behind your seam.I used a 6x6 piece of lumber and an old aluminum dogdish(he didn't bite me).Last advice is to be patient;a trait I have a hard time with.I,m sure glad I practiced on the floors before trying to tackle actual bodywork.Sorry for the book, here's the pics!

bosephus:

Nice...very nice job for your first try. When possible, back up your seams with a piece of copper. It disipates heat very well and the wire will not stick to it.

Keep up the good work and keep the photos rolling in.

Re: Midnight Rider, my 61

thanks for the kind words guys, makes me want to do more!I didn't do much to it today besides getting the inspection sticker(it's a Texas thing).I've got contractors here to pour a driveway so whatever is in my garage has to stay there which is not going to happen to the truck now that it's legal.I'm gonna drive it!The transmission is great and the truck runs pretty well.It seems like the carb may be dumping gas after it's shut off because she is HARD to crank after she is run to operating temp.It also has a little valve clatter under hard accelerationbut it's lotsa fun anyway!

The guy I bought it from was going to put it in a early eighties truck but had hip surgery and didn't want the standard anymore.I purchased a shifter relocation kit from Keisler so I could keep the bench and not come thru the cab behind the trans. cover. The kit was not cheap(about three and a half bones!)but I wanted to keep my bolt in tranny cover. It's probably the first contribution of many to the black hole I've affectionately named Midnight Rider!

by the by.....hard starting when warm and the detonation sounds like a timing issue, too much advance.

Nice rig! I have a 61 apache that was resored many years ago but has been ravaged again by the New England elements.Seeing your Pictures makes me miss driving the old girl. What was up with that ship? It looked like it had a giant band aid on it.LOL

Re: Midnight Rider, my 61

I got my frame painted! I used southern polyurethane's black epoxy.I was very happy with the paint and SPI's customer service is incredible.I talked with the owner about the induction/flash times and he gave me his cell # and told me to call for any help I needed(this was on saturday!)I sprayed the paint with a Hbr Freight HVLP and a mini detail gun.The mini gun worked great and really saved me because of the tight areas that needed to be sprayed.I could have easily done the whole job with that $14gun. anyway, heres a few pics
