It is my belief that if restoring one of these trucks to stock or near stock, and you are fortunate enough to have the original engine, it is an obligation to rebuild it, not turn it in as a core. Once gone, you can't get it back. If your truck doesn't have the original motor in it then it doesn't matter and it is a matter of whatever you want to do and can afford.

Definitely a crate motor with a warranty. My only regret is not going for the 383 from Summit instead of the 290hp from Jegs.
