Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
the drivers side steering knuckle is busted, and the tie rods are gone. im back in massachusetts now my dad is still stuck in florida but i think it might be able to be driven onto a truck
it had to to get it towed im not sure what il do. my dad called me back today and there going to total the truck. but they wont give him a check for it till he gives them the title, he thought it was here at his house in mass but we couldnt find it anywhere so now hes gotta wait till he gets another title from the RMV then he can give them the title not sure if i can do anything with the 04 GMC im in massachusetts and dont have the money to get it towed up here. damn shame though that truck was running perfect even now as it sits in the storage place the frame and the front drivers side is toast il try to get a pic up on here when i find my cable to the dig camera |

I always hate these situations. You`ve got a great donor, but circumstances suck.I did well in my case primarily because it was local.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
I do have a couple more pics. The truck is actually an 08. Everything is from the 08 except for the sheet metal. even the frame. I think he said his name is Wayne. he lives in lexington S.C. It was funny, My cousin and I was walking around the good guys car show last oct. and I was talking about doing the same conversion when we walked up on it. I almost peed on myself when I saw it. I couldn't stop looking at it. After talking with the owner he saidthe only cutting he had to do was the fire wall and floor pan . I think he said he had to cut the floor pan in order to get the fire wall to mate up to it. anyway here is some mo pics.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
oh yeah by the way. Everything including onstar still works and is covered under factory warranty because he didn't have to alter the wiring or anything else that you would think he would of had to. and it actually had more leg room than my 72. if you notice back side of the cab is longer than our originals so the seats set back a little farther. I wish i had more pics. I may be able to find him one day and take some more. He lives close by and my cousin knows where.

The insurance company will have it towed to a salvage pool auction where it will be sold to the highest bidder. In my area the major place they wind up is called Copart, I pretty sure they are a nationwide outfit with auction sites all over the country. You could check there web site and find out the requirements needed to be able to bid/ buy vehicles from them.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
I`m going to have to call B.S. on that one.I know it`s just what you were told. But,no way GM is going to warrant that. There`s a warranty on new parts. But not parts off a new (wrecked,I assume) vehicle swapped into a 37 year old truck,no matter how nice it is.Someone is stretchin`it a bit. That fine truck don`t need no exaggeratin`.It`s one fine ride.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
Special K, You missed it. Only the outside sheet metal is from the 72. The 08 is all nicely tucked into the 72 skin. Nothing but the sheet metal on the outside is 72.. He didn't have to do any modifications to the headliner either. It's all there. He bought the 08 2500 standard cab without the bed, took it home, and went to work.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
They sell it at an auction for cheap. It gets rebuilt with a reconditioned title. Come to thank of it just about all of our trucks should probably have a reconditioned title

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
From what I've heard, it's the frame that you want when doing something like this. If the frame was lunched, this may be a push to do, but who knows. I've heard that the frames in the older trucks isn't wide enough to handle the diesel. And the weight is probably an issue, too. Whatever you do, we want PICTURES!

Roughedup72 see if you can get all the build pics (assuming he took them)from that guy and post them here. A lot of us here would be interested on how what all is involved.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
Did he mount the 71 body (with a cab stretch) onto the 08 frame and drivetrain? That I would believe, but just putting the outer sheetmetal over the 08 would be crazy!

Pacific Performance Engineering built a 69 with a duramax in it.

Re: 2004 gmc sierra duramax stuff into my 71 GMC 3/4 ton
Sorry guys. I lost this thread an d just saw it on another post. From What I understand he used the cab from the 72, cut and sectioned the floor out of the 07. (It was actually an new body 07) so that he could weld it into the cab of the 72. Then he was able to use the dash and interior and all wiring harness'. He then worked the cab, fenders and the cowl and the bed onto the 07 frame.
If I run across him again I will be sure to ask if I could get more pics and pick his brain for more details and see if he will log onto this site and explain how he did it. He did say it would cost 50,000 plus the trucks for him to make one for me. TO much for my blood. And he did buy a brand new 07. notice its a work truck model so he save some $$$$ there.
