Re: doin' it right the second time (Americanmusc1e's 383)

pictures:

my old rod bearings

the new engine

the thing I've been driving, painted with a spray can, does 0-60 in an astounding 14.5 seconds, and it has dual 4" speakers

one of the few non-chevrolet vehicles I'd like to own, my Dads 1980 Jeep CJ5 that he bought new in high school, not the factory body though, a full fiberglass piece with a one piece front end

Just to be sure, you did put the flat top pistons in right?

Re: doin' it right the second time (Americanmusc1e's 383)

got the motor in and broken in yesterday, today we adjusted the timing and upped the Idle speed and took it for a drive, to a really cool car show (I should have brought a camera).

I fell in love with my truck again!!!!! the lopey idle sounds beautiful!!!! the sound system rocks!!! and although I haven't floored it yet, but the 388 has plenty of power!!!!!!!!

this is Desktop Dyno, I know that DD can be up to 15% optimistic, but I have ported/polished vortec heads(this graph is with stock vortecs), so the difference should be pretty close

Re: doin' it right the second time (Americanmusc1e's 383)

ok, what is the idle ignition timing supposed to be(vacuum advance disconected)???? the truck runs best with about 20 degrees, is this too much???

I also had a problem with the power valve (on my Holley 4160), the motor was running rich, and the truck would idle with the mixture screws all the way in. I pulled the bowl off and looked at the power valve, then I put it back together and it ran fine!!!! It idles much better now!!!

Re: doin' it right the second time (Americanmusc1e's 383)

With the engine idling at about 800 rpm, your timing should be no more than 10 with the vacum advance disconnected.

sounds good, but it sounded better when my power valve wasn't working and the thing would barely idle.

the water temps stay about 190, I don't think I'll have any problem
