Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
I always wondered what the inside of a cab looked like. Hey I bet if you took the truck to the track after scraping all that crud off you'd drop a full second
Gonna be nice, I can see the vision.

I was starting to wonder why mine didn't come with the factory floor air conditioning.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
As one of my brothers says: "Everything takes longer than it takes (and cost more too)." Memorial Day weekend vacation, yard work, and work work have put hurtin' on project time.
Anyway, today was wash day. Dave loaned me his 5 hp pressure washer and it did a good job taking off the first layer of crud. I'd love to know what the original owner slathered everything with, the hood hinges looked brand new after washing.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Now for a speed bump. I ordered up a front sway bar kit from ECE because my truck didn't come from the factory with one, and I didn't want to spend the time looking for the parts separately. It comes with genuine GM frame brackets. Good, right? Wrong.
The holes are drilled through the radius and the sharp edges could be used for shaving. Extra work time. The rest of the kit is good stuff - powder coated bar, cad plated hardware, and urethane bushings. Maybe I won't drag the door handles so much after this is installed...

OK - the sway bar brackets are bent and hacked into shape.
Meanwhile, here's some shots of the greenhouse/wood shed/parts storage/snake santuary:

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
I took the cover off the transmission since I wanted to take a look and it makes it easier to take the cab off.
Also, here's a shot of the unmolested dash and the rigging for yanking the cab. Just waiting for the trailer I'm borrowing to drop it on.

Popped the cab off today. OSHA wouldn't have approved of the method, but it's done.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Scrapin' crud. There's a reason why everyone doesn't do this stuff. A heat gun and kersone help a lot.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Thanks. I'm trying to get a high-quality paint job out of this. Keep it clean and simple. Takin' a week long vacation this week, but then I'm gonna hit it hard.
Where's the thread for your rig?

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Spent the day scrubbin'.
First a scotchbrite pad and old kerosene. Then a shot of purple degreaser and hit it with the power washer. Scrubbed the underside of the cab with kero too, but it's gonna require a little more elbow grease. So, I used Dave's old kerosene, Dave's power washer, and my cab's on Dave's trailer. I guess I'm gonna owe Dave sponsorship space on the doors.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
The clean-up continues. The remaining stuff on the underside is tough to get off. Paint stripper seems to work the best. Getting the cab and frame painted and put back together is the focus. Once that's done, I'm on the downhill side of the mountain.
In the meantime, work is stealing a week of my project time, and I have to jump on my other 1967 American classic and cut the lawn.

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
An SM420 is a heavy-duty four-speed that came in trucks. 1967 was the last year and the only year with an integral back up light switch. After '67 trucks got the SM465. "420" and "465" refer to torque ratings.
These transmissions have a "granny" first gear, in the case of the 420 it's 7:1. This is why the Jeep crowd likes these. They are very short, reliable, and have a rock crawler first gear. An SM420 weighs around 140 pounds () so be aware that these are not fast-shifting performance transmissions. A 465 goes somewhere around 185 pounds. Although the SM420 and SM465 were made by Muncie, they are very different than the M20, M21, and M22 car-type 4-speed transmissions. If your 1/2 ton truck is used for cruising and not heavy-duty hauling, these may be a better option. The link below is a good source of info. Check out the Knowledge section: http://www.novak-adapt.com/ Here's what I want to end up with for my truck. An SM420 with a Gear Vendors overdrive behind it:

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
That SM420 overdrive looks great. My son't struck has a 235 6-cyl and 4-speed, so I think it's probably a '420' as the 1st gear is a real 'granny'...
He wants a 4x4 frame for this truck so a transfer-case is definetely in our future. I'm sure it can be done or the jeep-guys wouldn't be doing it... I'm trying to talk him into an automatic because its easier... |

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
This whole "work" thing really cramps my style. However, it also pays for resto parts.
It's looking like I may be able to carve out an entire day dedicated just to truck stuff this weekend. Update to follow...

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Actually I'm sorry. It's a 250 cubic-inch 6-cyl...(1967)
I looked it up with the VIN when we got the truck, but my son was reading the owners-manual and he said something about a 235 and I remembered it. It's original, right off the farm so it must be a 250... I've never done it, but I was hoping that during a cab-off restoration it would be just as easy to set the cab in a 4x4 frame as the original... Yes I definitely need teenage-type help on this one if I ever get started... |

Re: 67 C20 Long Step: "Slow Silver"
Wash day again. Dave needed his power washer back, so I sprayed a few more parts. Now it's time to dig into the cab supports. This will be the toughest part of the whole resto.
I'm going to try to do it without any welding so there's less places where corrosion can get a foothold. This could get interesting...
