Re: 1983 Chevrolet C10 - Need help
Hey clawz,
I have a hoist you can borrow. I also have an engine stand. I need to get my stand back from a guy borrowing it. Let me know if you're interested to using my equipment. |

as far as the numbers on the front of the block, that's like a vin code. it helps to narrow down what they put that block into, number of bolts on the main caps, and hp rating. the 030 that you see stamped into the pistons does mean that those pistons are for a .030 overbored block.

shockermotorsports1 and cLaWz,
I can't start a PM topic with two people. If y'all interested in the trade maybe I can help. I have access to tools and a trailer. |

Re: 1983 Chevrolet C10 - Need help
Posted a new thread in the project board since this is going to be an ongoing thing with this truck. I appreciate everyones advice so far and I'm sure I will need to rely on the collective knowledge of this forum in the future.

Re: 1983 Chevrolet C10 - Need help
Well, good news is I tore down the heads today. Bad news is I have no idea if these were just bad seals or if there is a problem I need to look for.
Thats 3 different valve stem seals. I had 3 like the bottom left (only small chunks left), a few like the right one, and then the rest are like the top. Bottom is chewed up. All are very brittle unlike the new seals I have here. What would cause this? Other then that, took a straight edge to the heads and everything looks good. Do have one other random question however. What in the world is this bracket for? It is attached to the backside of the driver side head. Nothing was mounted on it so I'm at a loss. |

Re: 1983 Chevrolet C10 - Need help
seals tend to get old and brittle over time from just sitting. and the motor getting hot probably didn't help either. otherwise that's kind of a common thing that tends to happen in older motors that have been sitting for a while or have a lot of miles on them

Re: 1983 Chevrolet C10 - Need help
Thanks, guess its not as bad as I thought. Everything else looks good so far so with the new seals installed I should be good to go.
Tomorrow is reassembly day if all goes as planned, not looking forward to placing those cast iron heads without a hoist |
