I think Pat has one of the cleanest, simplest installs I have seen. I think there is a lot to be learned from him when installing one.

This is how my final product turned out. I used a newer Siveraldo gas cap cover and then open it to put gas.

Is this gas tank from LMC specifically for the 60's truck, or do I have to ask for a tank that will fit a 65 truck ?

I have been wanting to install a tank so I can get it out of the cab and have read several threads of people using Jeep tanks or Blazer tanks but wasn't for sure what year.

I bought the same tank from LMC with no instructions and called them. They said there is no instructions because it is a custom application on our trucks. YOU have to find a way to do it. I cut 1" tubing as spacers to lower the tank away from the sill and bolted it to my frame and then also used the straps from front to rear using "J" bolts through the rear cross member. I think I like the left to right better after seeing those pics.

I got my tank from www.truckandcarshop.com at a goodguys show. I paid $150 cash for it. You usually get things cheaper there. Also, they were selling for $160 but all I had left was $150 so I got it for that. I guess you can do that with them. They sell them in their catalogs for $195. I still have to get some rubber insulators for the straps where it holds on to the tank. I just wanted to get it in. I got the fuel filler hose from a friend of mine for nothing. That saved me about $50 for that little piece. Here are some pictures for your enjoyment.

I was planning to head to the truck show in Carlisle to get one of these tank kits. Just what I save in the oversize shipping will pay for the gas there and back.

I thinking about a '49 to '52 chevy car tank instead, not decided. The blazer tank install seems more common, easier to buy and cheaper, which is good. I found the '49 to '52 tank idea on the Stovebolt website.

Hey SSWfleetside, you mentioned the blazer tank seeming more common. What year of blazer will work and are you talking about a fullsize blazer or mid?

The pics I posted are of the blazer tank. It is the same tank that is used in the 67-72 blazers. They are sold as a kit and you can get a 0-30 or 0-90 ohm sending unit.

So what's the difference between the blazer tank and the 63-66 tank?

Just from the pics it looks like the blazer tank filler is moved over (towards the rear) just enough to not interfere with the sill mounting hole.

Is it optical illusion or is that the case?

To use with the straps, LMC gave me stripps of tar paper as the insulators.

If you are referring to the '63-'66 Suburban/panel tank, there is no difference in the position of the filler tube. The only difference is the depth and the lack of the notch for the spare tire in the '69-'72 Blazer tank.

Yes they do hang down below the frame a ways....don't remember exactly how much. I could measure one tomorrow.

If your budget allows, you might check out the "Vendor Marketplace" here in the classifieds section. There are two vendors here that build nice aluminum fuel tanks. I don't think they hang as low as the Blazer tanks.

You might also check out Lakeroaster's build thread. He installed a late 40's early 50's passenger car tank in his stepside. It doesn't hang too low.

If you don't want a tank that is a "tail dragger" 'you can use a 49-'52 Chevy passenger car gas tank mounted behind the rear axle.
