Re: Junkyard Picture Thread
Here's a few from Spokane Wa. Unfortunately I don't think any of it's available. The first 3 belong to a 4x4 outfit, they've been sitting like this for years. Future projects? The last shot is a pick your part and the trucks are projects belonging to the owner.

Re: Junkyard Picture Thread
I love junk yards. When I was 14-15 my Great Aunt would drop me off at the local yard on Saturdays. I would take a lunch and would just explore all day.The yard had cars and trucks from the 20 to the 60.

Re: Junkyard Picture Thread
My wife tells that out of our 43 yr marriage, she's spent half that sitting in the pickup reading a book, while I looked for parts in junkyards.
Like duallyjams, I can entertain myself for hours in a junkyard, whether I need anything or not. I like the museum volunteer work for that reason, too. It's sad to see all the neat stuff go to the crusher, but not all can be saved, and some have to "donate" parts to save others. Thanks for all the pics.

Re: Junkyard Picture Thread
My first trip to a junk yard was when I was about 5 and my sister was 7. It was so much fun, we could climb over and in the cars, everything had a shifter stick you could play with, and most of the 30’s cars had no covering left on the roof so you could climb through the top. It was like an automotive jungle gym. I built most of my early cars from parts out of junk yards. Almost everything cost $5.00 or less, doors, hoods, seats, grilles, etc. The late 60’s early 70’s was probably the best picking I ever saw. Many cars in mint condition were junked simply because the transmission went out, or it wasn’t worth buying new tires, or the owner died. The heavy cars were plentiful and almost untouched, since owners of these cars didn’t shop wrecking yards. Cadillacs offered chrome door strikers, chrome lock knobs, and electric wiper motors. Oldsmobiles had beautiful steering wheels and e-brake handles. There was a lot to pick from, and it inspired creativity.
By the mid 70’s everything in the yards I frequented dried up – nothing but “new” cars, or at least too new for me to care. When I moved to north Idaho, it was like stepping back in time. Many yards with a variety of old iron, both car and truck. Sadly, most of that is gone now, or is so over priced it’s almost cheaper to buy new reproduction parts. I do miss the thrill-of-the-hunt though, that never stops being fun. |

Re: Junkyard Picture Thread
That's not a junkyard. That's a playground for the chevy junkies.

I was in Colonie, NY, near Albany in 2007, building a restaurant, so I made the trip to Adler's place. He had a bunch of '60-'66 Chevy/GMC trucks. I spent a few hours walking around checking them all out. That day was one of the most fun things I did when I was in upstate NY for six months. |
