Re: Problem with my 72 fleetside yesterday

I prefer Holleys, have never seen one crap out. They always seem to run great unless they really get gunked up with crud to the point where the idle air bleeds are plugged. Easy to rebuild, fix and tune.

Also, if it still does it, try changing the distributor itself. My dad's ElCamino was doing almost the same thing. As it turned out, something was going haywire in the dist. It would run OK when cold, but bog and barely run when warmed up. We tried changing everything in the dist. before just sticking a new one in it.

It also started suddenly as yours did. It had been running fine for years. All of a sudden, we were out in it and, PFFJJFFTT!!
Sadly Matt it IS an Edelbrock Carb.
If money were no object it would have a Holley Street Avenger on it.

I kind of figured. Mine used to bog down and almost die if I stabbed the throttle from a take-off. It did it once while trying to pull out into heavy traffic, almost got me ran over, but was able to coast back into the turn lane before traffic caught me. I ordered the Holley quickly after that. I've had four Edelbrock carbs and they all did that. While your guy is rebuilding it, have him jet it down about four sizes and install thicker metering rods and see what happens.

BTW, I have the 570 Street Avenger on my engine. It runs perfect. I had to jet it down just a tad, and it works great.

Be sure it doesn't have too much fuel pressure, Edelbrocks only like less than 5psi, and most stock pumps push up to 7 psi and that will push fuel past the needle and seat, the only way to "fix it" is to put an inline fuel pressure regulator on it and adjust the pressure to 4-4.5 psi MAX.

Never heard of that and that sucks. I have almost 8 psi to my Holley 3310 and no problemo. I'm running a Holley High Volume chrome pump with Summit fuel line, filter and fuel pressure gauge combo. Love it.

Well my mechanic showed me the old Needle/Seat and it was FILTHY.
He said that the "Sock" on the Fuel Filter was rotted, and he was thinking that a minute piece may have gotten past the Fuel Filter.
But under any circumstances it was dirty.
So Carb rebuild, New Cowl Hood, Fuel Filter, Ignition Module and cut down the Front Bumpstops.

Going to H.A.N. so my Mechanic has it for the rest of the week, and I'll pick it up next Tuesday.

Re: Problem with my 72 fleetside yesterday

That does look bad. Make sure to use a large high flow filter and change it often. The only "sock" I know if is at the end of the fuel sender pick up tube. They often fall apart and get sucked into the filter, pluggin it up.

Yep that was the culprit.

So how often do you guys here on the Forum, change YOUR Fuel Filters?

Re: Problem with my 72 fleetside yesterday

Depends on the car. On my Toyota truck with fuel injection, I changed the fule filter every 30,000 miles. On my new cars, I change it when the owner's manual says so. On my 67 Camaro, I don't think I've put 10,000 miles on it since 1991. Truck's apart now but will be getting a new Holley 600 cfm carb, new Weiand intake and new fule filter, of course.
