Re: RANT: HEI/ MSD Streetfire vs Skipwhite...
Yeah alot of people that I think have issues with points are probably dealing with a worn out distributor (shaft bushings are a usual culprit) that cause innacurate dwell readings that need constant adjustment.
In reality, if the distributor is in good working order, you shouldn't have to touch them. I tend to check them about every 10-12,000 miles with a dwell meter and 99% of the time I don't have to adjust at all. I sometimes might remove them, file them and reinstall if I feel the need but that's about it. (A good set of solid points can be filed and re-used) Cheap points on the other hand, which most people would buy...... I have 3 cars here still running points that I drive frequently. My 70 formula still running the same points in it that I installed in 2006 on it's last tune up Works perfectly. Other examples here that have went even longer. Cheap, simple, and it works. |

Re: RANT: HEI/ MSD Streetfire vs Skipwhite...
Yah I just don't want to deal with the extra hassle of points or conversion stuff.
I like the billet hei the price is all that holds me back. I can't swing that much in one payment. But if there is a distributor just like it that I can put good stuff in later and it's as tunable then I'm all for it Posted via Mobile Device

Re: RANT: HEI/ MSD Streetfire vs Skipwhite...
I can understand the want or need for a good electronic setup. In which case I've only used MSD billet stuff as mentioned, or an OEM HEI simply because that's what came in my 79 pickup and I have no desire to change it,,,,yet.
Don't know what I'd recommend otherwise as other brands seem to be hit or miss. ICE makes an excellent ignition, but if MSD billet prices are a little much, you won't want to look at this stuff. |

The US makes it to hard to run a business without being taxed to the demise of the company. I hate the china built stuff but our taxes made it happen.

Re: RANT: HEI/ MSD Streetfire vs Skipwhite...
A friend of mine went with a Skip White HEI against my warnings. It lasted all of 60 miles before it burned up. Wasnt worth the money to send it back so he bought a MSD HET from Summit and its been in there for hundreds of trouble free miles.

I bought one of those Skip white HEI's and it didn't last very long either before the coil went out. My brother bought one too and he never had a single problem with his i guess i was just unlucky and got a bad one.

I bought the billet hei. Took the analog 6a box off and havnt looked back. Other than coolant plumbing made the vacuum advance an issue. So it was deleted. Works good for me.

Re: RANT: HEI/ MSD Streetfire vs Skipwhite...
My friends (streetfire) hei from msd worked for 6 months before the module died. Put in a new one and its been good for years. I got my Chinese pro comp to run good after finding a small cut in a plug wire that was arcing and its been smooth for six months sbc has never failed me at any point. Although when I first got it I trashed the distributor gear and module for my prev gear and a/c Delco module before ever dropping it in. I also got the only pro comp that was shimmed tight at .015 shaft play. So far I think the crappy procomp that everyone bashes on is actually nicer than the streetfire hei. I'm also housing an accel coil and Mallory 6al as well
I just went out and bought a msd pro billet hei. My dispointment is that they don't have adjustable vacuum canisters like crane kit. Would help a lot with low vacuum engines. Then you can only go down to 18* limited advance and then they go in three and one four increment stop bushings to 28*i have a lathe I can fix this issue with but not everyone does. Not exactly a superfine tune. Also that $100 heat module is useless if you run an ignition box. Other than that its lashed nice and tight so shaft play is minimal and all parts at of vice quality and debured nicely. Still would recommend the msd pro billet hei. Even the pro comp or streetfire if you replace the electronics. Better than an old worn crusty distributor. Posted via Mobile Device
