Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

i once filled my bed with huge water soaked logs that weighed about 50 pounds a piece, they were only about 20-24 inches long too. i left them in my bed for a good month. you should get any less gas milage, its not that much weight and you always look like you are busy with stuff in your bed!!lol

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

Yeah,if I didn`t like the ride I`d find something good to add weight in the bed. That`s what the engineers figured.Rather than kill the truck`s awesome haul capacity, that`s what I`d do.I`ve always been an 8-lugger guy and am used to loading without worrying about overloading. For most cargo,if it fits the truck can haul it.I`ve never had a bumper at the ground like I`ve seen some 1/2 tons. For me it`s 8-lug longbed/5-lug shortbed.

Yep, what most everybody's saying. What's a C20 without a harsh ride. K20 even harsher.

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

The first time I hit a speedbump in mine it was quite a surprise! At least my head did not hit the roof. LOL! And I thought I was going slow. The thing I need to address in mine is when I do hit a bump my seat cushion has a lot of bounce to it. Probably need some new foam for it?

You could pull out some of the short leafs and install some firestone air bags to get the carring capacity back up

Capacity is not an issue for me. I doubt i will ever haul anything needing that much.

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

I had a 73 K20 (did they call them that?) for a little while and I will say it rode a lot nicer than my 71. I think they have longer springs or something?

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

I think the 4wds ride better than the 2wds.At least the suspension is balanced and the truck sit`s level. With a coil front/leaf rear it makes for some different handling.
No matter what I drive,I don`t pound over speed bumps...OUCH! I about stop, roll over, and speed back up.I`m usually already driving the speed limit already and passing over them is just more I care to subject my stuff to.

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

I put new 3/4t coils in the only longbed 1/2t I`ve owned. Then, added Air Lifts so I could really haul.It rode fine with the air down.leafs are definately a noticeable difference. But,not complaining.I`m an old truck hard head.I love the feel of a truck.I used to not want an automatic or power steering wimpifying my trucks.I love that truck-like feel.I like camping better than hotels, too.Go figure...

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

If I want a "manly" ride, I'll go back to driving CJ-5's. My 3/4 ton is a "wimpy" ride compared to that. I want a smooth ride, so 1/2 ton trucks on the street for me.

Really, and the chattering windows and shaking steering wheel and popping noises in mine distracts me from the ride quality. Oh, and the rotted out cab supports help absorb some of the shock of bumps. LOL. Ride quality!!!!

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

My coil-sprung C20 got a lot better when I removed the factory "helper" springs that bolted to the frame. You'd hit a bump and halfway through the spring rate would double!

New variable rate springs and good shocks helped.

Other than that I enjoy the heavy-duty four-speed, manual steering, manual brakes, no-rubber-in-the-front suspension work out every time I drive..,

Radial tires helped quite a bit with mine. I had been running with the split rims & maybe the original tires.

Drive an old Cruiser around for a while. My C2500 rides like a caddy in comparison.

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

you have serious health issues and shouldn't be going anywhere in any car if you are having the thealth issues you mentioned from a bumpy ride in a truck......the doctor is a quack to tell you its the trucks fault....the rest of us don't have any issues.....you could swap in 1/2 ton front coils. front row passengers feel more bumps from the front wheels, rear end gets the loads and the stiffer springs help with body roll.

.....rugged springs with good weight capacity is partly what makes it a 3/4 ton. the rear springs in my 3/4 ton burb 2wd are not worn out, but they still don't seem stiff enough for trailer towing (bounce too easy for a 3/4 ton) so the HD option units are going in.

the truth: 2wd's ride better than 4 wheel drives. the 2wd suspension is a work of art and light years ahead of the covered wagon carryover on the 4x4's. thats party the allure of these trucks and why i like them so much. sucks that gm decided to be frugal and put those ugly leaves on the back again in '73. a beam axle on the front makes a truck ride like a tank and the independent suspension rides like a car in comparison. the 67-72 (2wd) trucks got the best combination of attributes of any factory road going rig ever. add sway bars, poly bushings, modern rubbber, etc, and these trucks can hold their own against late model trucks!

as for the overload leaves......cleaner and more practical to just use 3/4 ton rear coils on a 1/2 ton (it was an option anyway). my dad did the upgrade on his 72 burb 1/2 ton and the overloads never engaged after that.......in hindsight it would have been worthwhile to remove them and cut out some weight.

and why do people want leveled trucks? the rake eliminates that saggy rear end look from the side and compensates for hauling loads, trailers, etc . plus, thats how classic hot rods sit. must be logic in the stance......trucks still come that way from the factory and it is the only way to roll.

Re: Calling all you 3/4 ton and 1 ton-ers

nah.......i am a new englander (red sox, patriots, etc) and besides, the real estate taxes would be killer........LOL

yes half tons ride a little smoother, but my burb 3/4 ton rides almost as smooth as my dad's 87 burb 1/2 ton 2wd that got new shocks a couple years ago. on the highway its very smooth and the stiff ride really only makes you notice when on a dirt road or when you hit a frost heave (a lot of these up here in maine after last winter). i only have a short dirt drive to deal with and i go slow its not biggie. i bought my truck because i like the extra cargo capability of the heavier chassis for the purposes of trailer towing. and a 3/4 or 1 ton is just more interesting because most of the vehicles out there are 1/2 ton (regardless of year or make).
