Re: next up, gear vendors..

I'm hearing the thing to do is to ace the carrier bearing and rear shaft and just go with a one piece drive shaft. I did have a drive shaft guy tell me that I could have run a short front drive shaft with no problem, but who knows...

Re: next up, gear vendors..

Mtdave2,

I had a 1970 longbed with a hot 454 and a Muncie M21 4spd in it. The previous owner had converted it to a one piece driveshaft. It had a bad vibration in it that I could never get out of it.

On a longbed or especially a Longhorn, I would definately recommend staying with the two piece driveshaft. JMHO.

Maybe Andy (Longhornman) will chime in....he knows a LOT about these trucks....especially Longhorns.

Re: next up, gear vendors..

I have the GV with a 1 piece shaft in my burb. (with no problem, smooth) any vibration with a balanced shaft would be caused my a lack of a proper angle. shafts need to have a min angle (drop) from front to back.

Re: next up, gear vendors..

Yes, please post your install, I've been on the fence about this recently but I think the $3k would be made up fairly soon seeing as fuel prices keep going up.

Lemield, somebody in another thread told me I shouldn't get one because it would bog my engine too much due to having 3.08's. Sounds like you didn't have a problem? I've got a K10 shortie with a 350 (.30 over) and a sm465/np205. Any thoughts?

Thanks

It's all in how you use it, knowing your gears, engine and when it's lugging. Yes, if you drop it in top gear all the time at 1400 RPM or whatever, your mileage will drop because you're lugging it. But there are times when the engine is fine at that low of an RPM. If you know how to use your gears and pull it down a gear or 2 when needed, the mileage won't drop.

The Corvette's and 6 speed Camaros and Trans Am's are the same way. You can't just run the Vette in 6th all the time. But you CAN run it in 6th a good portion of the time (on the HWY anyways). That's how they get the awesome mileage out of them.

NAY SAY'ERS: Please chime in and tell me I'm smoking my salad...

Re: next up, gear vendors..

I'm VERY interested in how this works out for you. I'm starting to save my penny's for GV and would like your input on the install and how it operates

Hope it works well for you
Thanks

Re: next up, gear vendors..

The other thing to consider is that it doesn't just improve your mileage and RPM on the highway, but it allows you to keep the RPM's where you want them at just about any speed, be it around town, towing, etc. Right now, most of our non-overdrive trucks have one gear above about 45 MPH or so, maybe 2 if you rev the crap out of it. Now you'll have between 2 and 4 GEARS to choose from at those same speeds. Most of the time, you're not going to shift it 8 times getting on the freeway, but when you need those in between gears, you've got 'em. The driveability just goes through the roof!

Mtdave2,

I had 3.08's when I originally installed the GV unit. Now it has 3:73's. I am sure that my mileage went down....

Ok, that just blows... I hope GV sent it insured!! I live in LA and was almost tempted to make the drive down there to get it. In anywhere but LA, it would have been an hour and a half drive. Being I live in Sh**sville, it would have been 3 - 4 hours of traffic and road rage. I let them send it to me. My UPS driver is still suffering from the HERNIA after delivering the GV unit and my bed wood all within about 2 months!

Re: next up, gear vendors..

Don't feel bad. At least it made it there, it's just still on the truck.

I had UPS "lose" a custom suspension order. It was insured but the vendor has to wait 30 days before UPS will pay out. Well... on day 30 (now that I have waited the extra 30 days with the car torn apart), the package "magically" shows up back at the vendor. The vendor had to pay to re-ship it (on their dime) and I had to wait another week from then.

I HATE UPS!!!!!

Won't even talk about the last large package they dropped off. Had I been the driver, I would have been ashamed to have left a package in that condition with anyone.

Good luck man!
