I just hauled one back from Utah myself. Use U-Haul. Tell them it is for an 05 Civic. All of their trailers are the same size/width. The only difference is whether or not the trailer is galvanized. You will have no problem. Also, rent the Uhaul trailer in the city you will be picking up the truck in and go one way. A lot easier to drive there without a trailer behind you.

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

Not to deter from OldSkool's question at-hand, but I have a very similar question: Moving to CO from NC later this year and want to tow my 68 C20 LWB BB. I know for a fact that it fits (barely) on one of the car carriers, but I had a really bad experience earlier this summer and am super nervous about attempting to tow it again. I will have a massive 24' moving truck to haul it with... all things considered, will that be good to go?

I just really want it to tow straight and smooth!

i attempted to tow it earlier this summer with a Ford F-150 and got about 1 mile down the road before it got some death wobbles and nailed the guard rail. All bad and I am still super bummed out about it. I will post a pic of it loaded and ready to go just before we left (10 min later on was on the side of the interstate, limping the thing back to my house... can post pics if everyone promises to take it easy on me!!)

NOTE: it was probably a dumb as $#!* move to load some furniture in the back of it, in hindsight.

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

I towed my 69 on a u-haul trailer and it was lowered 2 inches. I told them I was hauling a 69 nova. It hauled great ! no problems with it fitting on and the surge brakes worked great ! I also used the same trailer to deliver my 94 corvette to Long Island, ( I got rid of the vette to buy my truck smart move? )

I am pretty sure the reason you had a problem was not enough tongue weight. I learned the same lesson 35 years ago.

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

How much did the stuff in the back of the trailered truck weigh? A larger truck won't stop it from swaying if it isn't loaded correctly. I would take everything out of the back of the 68 before I tried it again.

You don't want to increse tongue weight. That's a bad move.

A trailer that will haul 7500 lbs is typically only rated for 1200lbs on the tongue. Your problem was having too much weight on the back of your f-150 with the trailer and the furniture load. I don't know how much weight you had in the back of your truck but that side to side action from the the back is typically the sidewalls of your tires rolling.

Your 68 is way front heavy already especially with that big block. Not much weight in the rearend so you want it setting right where it is on that trailer or back some. You just shouldn't have loaded the f-150 too. Weight distribution on a trailer is important. You want to center as much of it as you can over the axles of your trailer to reduce the affect it will have on the handling of your pull truck.

One thing you'll notice is that a car hauler usually has it's axles farther forward to help with weight distribution of an automobile.

And just so you know that I practice what I preach, here is a pic of my big block truck on the 16' flat bed trailer I pulled it from Rogers, Arkansas to Oklahoma City with. Notice how far back the truck sits on the trailer and and it tracked like a dream ALL the way here. Never wiggled once.

hell of a lot cheaper including the extra fuel to rent it locally and haul it both ways. Its 100 bucks more to haul the trailer one way.

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

So how much does uhaul normally charge for a 600 mile trip. My bro will be coming down from east Texas and it would prolly be cheaper to let him drive the 600 miles here without trailer and rent one here and drive back with it, save the gas.

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

I guess it depends on how far you're going whether you get it locally or not. I wouldn't mind pulling it empty since my 4x4 gets about 10mpg loaded or empty!

Re: Our Trucks and a Uhaul Trailer

how many people are going to ask for a U-haul quote on a site that isn't U-haul?
I'm willing to bet there's a U haul web site or even a phone number you can get that info on with no guessing or fuzzy memory syndrome.

I'm just sayin

Not in my case. $65 local. $115 one way. I did it directly thru U-Haul.com. The additional drag from the trailer diminishes your mileage significantly. You can also save a lot of time by going 85 to your destination as opposed to 55 pulling a trailer.

The U-Haul website is how I booked my trailer. I got a better rate that way than when I called the store.

Dude, sometimes you need another cup of coffee before you start posting.

There isn't anything wrong with people asking questions like that here. Why would it bother you anyway? Besides having a little knowledge before they make the phone call and get talked into something whether it's what they wanted or not, they're likely to find out some additional info that the high quality, underpaid employees at u-haul would forget to mention. Like this saving 100.00 if you rent locally and pull both ways. I didn't know anything about it until vegas mentioned it. Granted I don't rent much from u-haul since I have vans/trailers of my own but still. It's good to get the info from the guys you trust don't you think?

55?

I pulled my trailer with the truck on it 70mph. I know, I just mentioned driving cautiously but hey, it was clear interstate!

Yeah, and while we're at it, we can start giving airline quotes too! Anybody travelling to Cancun?

U-haul varies from location to location, depending where they need equipment. Like here in California, everybody is getting outa Dodge and heading east, so to take a U-haul trailer or truck one way out of here costs a FORTUNE! But in the event that someone is dumb enough to actually move this way, they'll all but give you the stuff to get here!

Did I mention it's going to 108° by tomorrow out here?!

Risk a ticket? The speed limit on the interstate is 70 mph.

You mentioned 85mph. Where do you drive?

It's 55 pulling a trailer...signs are posted all along the 15 fwy, as well as on the fenders of the trailer.

Actually, I'll do 90 just to keep up with everyone else if I am not pulling a trailer

Bummer. We don't have that around here. As long as you can pull it, you can drive the speed limit. We don't have a seperate speed limit for Semi's either. As for the fenders, if anybody starts painting speed limits on them, I'll shoot em!

I ran 75-80 all the way to AZ and back. Trailer on both ways loaded on the way home. LOTS of cops were out and never said a thing.
