Thank you everyone for the help.

There are a few mods to make this work. Like I said before, its not a bolt in and go. First off the throttle linkage will need to be lengthened, poss. different spacers on fan, exhaust for sure, and lets not forget the driveshaft. The holes in the crossmember are the easy part, they are already there. Sean

Re: firewall hei dizzy recess

One problem with moving the bellhousing crossmember forward, is that it will raise the crossmember as it comes forward. This is due to the upward angle of the frame in that area. This will change the angle of the engine, which in turn changes the angle of the trans output. This can cause driveshaft vibrations unless the pinion angle is adjusted accordingly.

Also I don't recall there being another set of holes in the frame to mount the bellhousing crossmember farther forward. That may be the case on the '67-'72 frames, but not on the '63-'66 frames.

Re: firewall hei dizzy recess

I would just use a small cap style HEI like the MSD Pro Billet. These units are pricey, but so is moving the engine and transmission forward. Take a look:

Another easy option is to just buy a MSD Ignition Box and install it with your original points distributor. These boxes turn your points into a low voltage switch for the box and allow for a strong series of sparks. I am using a 1969 points distributor with a MSD 6AL box in my truck and I have not touched the points since 1990 when I assembled the current engine. As you can tell, I am a big fan of MSD products. Here's an example of the 6A ignition box also:

Good luck with your truck.

Sincerely,
Rick

Hey BugeyeV8 - what's this small HEI you mentioned? Never heard of a stock one. Still coil-in-cap? What's it come in?

Re: firewall hei dizzy recess

That's interesting.....I didn't know you could run a MSD box with a points distributor.

Re: firewall hei dizzy recess

I just set the engine in my truck so I could run wires and such around the engine. I do not have my tranny mount in yet and the dist is about 1/4" from the firewall. I will gain more clearance when I put a mount in and this is with a BBC. I am using the Mallory HEI dist.
