Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
No James Blanton screw up here thankyou. This was a VERY reputable builder and parts vendor. A true truck guy. I really don't know what happened. He sent me the first part of the order and my restored parts in record time and needed to get the rest of the order. 4 months later I get another few parts and now 5 months later I'm still waiting on a few miscellany. No e mails, no phone calls, nothing. I paid for everything up front. It's too bad because I really like the guy and his son, and even though his parts were as expensive as anywhere, I felt that it was worth it for the invaluable advice he was able to give. Just a live and learn deal.
I really am hoping that it's just a matter of, on his part, going through these rough times and just needing some time to make it right. Last edited by 100gold; 02-22-2010 at 09:57 AM. |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
I know when dealing with CSM, you always need to call them. His wife handles the emails and is very slow and rarely responds. Can you get better pics of your restored woodgrain for me. I want to see the color of the woodgrain. Trevor

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Trevor,
I was pretty careful with the name of the vendor, but yeah, you got it. I'll get you some more pics of the woodgrain but it'll be next week sometime before I get a day off and get over to the truck. I'm guessing that when I see it next, there's going to be a whole lot of black going on! I could sure use some help with the wheel and tire sizes, especially back spacing decisions. |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
I need some advice fellas.
Dad had bought back in the 80's alot of the NOS trim and put it away. With out looking at it I thought I had it all. When I really pulled it out to see what exactly I had, I found that I was missing a bunch. I have over half of the trim needed. In pricing the replacement stuff I got a shocker. So, do I sell all of my NOS and go with repop? And if so, who do I order it from to get the quality? This is such an important part of this truck I hate to make a mistake. |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Some of the repop mounting abilities are quite lacking but the main decision will be up to you and your budget. Depending on what pieces you are lacking you will probably end up spending double for NOS (if not triple) than what you would pay for repop stuff.
Now... here's my recommendation. Become a site supporter for $25, help the site that supports your hobby, and then place WTB (want to buy) ads for the NOS parts you need. There's not better source for parts than this site, guaranteed. By the way... you have made some great progress on the project; nice work!

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Thanks for supporting the board!
I would put it in the 67-72 Parts Board on the site, and help offer some parts to fellow board members and their projects. Now... just to clarify, you might want to consider other opinions and that being locating the finishing NOS pieces you need.

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
A few update pics here. The single stage ppg has been worth every penny spent. Quality product and a perfect example of getting what you pay for.
This week we'll do the bed. Getting the cab on was a huge milestone. Enjoy the pics! |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Thanks Newt!
Yes, it's coming along good. I scored a set of et slotted mags off of craigslist, they'll be here today. I'll send them directly to the polisher and then lay a coat of clearcoat on them when they get back. Then the tire size dilemma. I'm going to wait on tires until the bed is on the truck. It'll give me a better idea as to how she's going to stand. |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Thanks fellas!
I workrd my kahui off yesterday and got the underside of the bed completely stripped and wirewheeled down to bare metal. We then primed it and shot it with a coat of rustoleum black. Today, we'll spray a bedliner on the whole bottom side and kick it off to the sanding room. By the end of next week the bed should be painted and bolted to the chassis. We're leaving our bed mounts and cab mounts loose at this point. We anticipate having to do some smimming here and there in order to get the perfect trim line hole adjustments. That bed is going to be a dream to block out compared to the intracacy of the other parts. Should go really fast! |

Re: Worth Restoring- Dad's old truck
Well we got the rest of the paint done. We did the Hood( sorry forgot pics) the bed and all of our small pieces like the ashtray and glovebox door. We're very happy fellas now that that paint gun is put away!
We put the bed on yesterday and the stance is starting to show up now. Those tires that are on it are 235-75-15's on 6 inch Buick Riviera wheels. I bought a set of ET slotted mags off of craigslist and they would not fit. As I was advised by TX FIRFIGHTER. What can I say, I gotta learn the hardway I guess. I paid 200.00 for them and was able to sell them the next week for what I paid. Wheel and tire selection for this truck is driving me crazy! We'll get going on the cutting and polishing this next week and see if we can get enough interior in it to get the motor fired up. We bought this motor from a guy that had built it for a Chevelle. He put less than 100 miles on it and ordered an Edelbrock crate motor for his Chevelle, a 454. He spent 5 grand on this motor and claimed that it was built for 400 horsepower. No paperwork with the motor and he couldn't remember the cam specs. We can see that the right parts are there for his claim but more than likely it's overcammed. Our goal is to get it started before we put the front clip on and if we have to recam it the job will be much easier. So here's some pics and comments are more than welcome! Also, wheel and tire suggestions would sure be helpful! |
