I have a question for you guy's. According to the block serial# I have a '68 large journal 327. It appears to have been rebuilt and has 882(accessory hole) heads on it. My question is short of tearing it down is there any way to tell which crank it has in it? Thanks,

The only way I know is the oil pan will have to come off. You will have to get a look at the cast #'s on the crank itself.

as far as 327/350, like most said, it depends on your app. Personally, I love the 327. It is different and it is tough. I built one with 11.5:1 compression and a set of weber carbs and you talk about a quick throttle response screamer ! I guess I would go with the 327 because they are rare. There's nothing like talking to kids nowaday's who have never heard of a 327 or a 302 !

im probably way wrong but didnt the small journal 327's have a smaller harmonic ballancer.
my 63 327 has a really narrow ballancer on it. im not planning on replacing my 327 but if it goes south the boat is getting a 350, that is if a connecting rod doesnt let all of the lake in.

327 is my pick. one of the best, if not the best engines chevrolet ever produced. just my .02 worth.
BTW tx firefighter, that is one of the best looking engines ive seen. GREAT JOB

i`ve run more 350s than 327s.I like both.I`ve seen the factory relpace 283s,327s,and 396s with 307s,,and 402s without a noticable change in performance.People still kept raving about the old ones,though,and never stopped except for the fact that we`ve come so ar away that many have never experienced them.The thing with the 327 is how it ran.It`s more than numbers or size.We hear terms like "wound tight" when we describe a 327.The "factory" got 365 streetable hp out of that carburated,steel headed,points ignitioned mouse 45 or so years ago.
Here`s my`68 truck 327 w/64cc heads & 10:1.I had a 327 Torker intake (oil fill) but decided an air gap would work best.So,the look won`t be totally vintage.But,she`ll be runnin`good!

Every time I mention to someone that I have a 327 in my truck they ask if it's some kind of high performance set up.
For the cool factor you can't beat a 327.

I say go for the cubes. Nostalgia is great but you can't go wrong with the bigger ci. In fact stroke a 350 and slap some 327 decals on it if you like.

Well of the 2 choices I would go with the 350
Myself I would go with a 400 and tell everyone it is a 283.
