Re: Need help from magazine collectors
Been doing a little work on the project. The shaft (AA 50-6900) has been installed in my transmission.
Here is the reluctor ring (what sends the pulse to the VSS)The clamp-on reluctor ring (#716072) included in this kit uses an Advance Adapters output shaft Here is the reluctor ring and VSS installed. I have a lot to do before the transmission gets installed but though you would like an update. Last edited by Thealien; 12-01-2009 at 03:58 PM. Reason: can't spell |

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
Thanks for the pics, it looks good! How exactly does the reluctor ring "clamp" to the shaft. Also, why does that area of the shaft have what looks like old style speedo gears milled into it? After looking at the pics online for weeks I haven't been able to figure that out.

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
The shaft is actually a 700R4 shaft that they machine a little to work with the reluctor ring.
Look at the second reluctor ring picture. You will see a split in a clamp/ring and a split in the reluctor ring. There are 2 allen bolts holding the two black halves together and when you tighten them they clamp on that speedo gear area. At first I was not happy and thought they could have done a much better job but most likely they aren't making the reluctor ring but modifying something that already exists to work. When I finally decided to install it I put a liberal amount of blue loctite on the threads of the clamping bolts, placed the adapter with VSS on to help locate the reluctor ring in relation to the VSS. I then removed the adapter and tightened those screws really tight. After all of this the reluctor is sitting slightly cocked and it needs to be straight to keep the distance from the VSS consistent at .010-.012. With a little tapping here and there and prying I got it damn close and believe it will work. Time will tell!! |

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
I went back and re-read this post and realized how much I DIDN'T know just a few weeks ago. Thanks to Thealien and the internet I now have just enough info to feel confident in spending a bunch of money on parts.
For those that might actually want to find the magazine article as well, the publisher pointed me to PRI Media and here are the two issues I am considering getting. FOUR WHEELER Peterson's 4Wheel Nobody can confirm or deny that the article is actually in either of these, but at this point I am just so damn curious that I might spend the $20 some-odd dollars so I can look at both of them!

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
When you get them scan me a copy would you?
Probably don't really need it now anyway. We probably know more about this swap than they do. We definately know more than Advance Adapters by the responses we recieved!

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
I will, and I AGREE 100%. Like I said, it's mainly curiosity at this point.

Critter, I'll take a look through my mags and see if I have either one of those. Trevor

Re: Need help from magazine collectors
did you use a 2wd 4l60 or a 4wd 4l60. my tranny guy said the shaft is already shorter in a 4wd, and i was wondering if i still needed AA shaft,or is it that the shaft is machined down for the relucter ring..i was wondering then if the reluctor ring could be machined out to fit the stock shaft. just throwing out cenarios to see where i can save a buck or not
