Yo! texasfunk!
I DO understand!! Never lucky enough to be able to afford a Z, but my '76 "big bumper" sure gives me great times with the 350 I built and the other mods,...AND I get to commute each day in it! I'd not be doing that with a Z!
Todd.

Re: C/k truck 7k tach&130 mph cluster 73-87

This may be a simple conversion but if I can get tachman to do this for a reasonable price, I'd like to have it done. The truck fuel gauge in the clock position and 130 MPH Camaro speedo and 7K rpm Camaro tach. The main point to letting him do it is getting a refurbed cluster back. I get tired of tapping on the gauges to get a dash light to come back on at night.

Otherwise it'll get an Autometer tach mounted on the dash in front of the A-pillar. I've done that to my last two Blazers and don't mind the look at all.

Re: C/k truck 7k tach&130 mph cluster 73-87

Yeah, BRUISER, that old floppy circuit has always been problematic, thus the hardwiring. My Camaro NEVER has a problem with lights or other dash connections anymore, and it's seen nearly 40,000 commuter miles since my conversion.
Sad to hear about your fine Z, texasfunk! Now I'm bummed.
Oh well, I guess you'll always have great memories of that experience!! And me, of my screamin' 327/BW T-10 4spd '53 Studebaker Commander with 4.55:1 rear gearing,...totalled by an idiots' company P/U in '75.

Re: C/k truck 7k tach&130 mph cluster 73-87

Anyone else interested in an odometer with the 100k mile marker? Our '99 tahoe has one, but it's the only one of our 4 Chevys that does. I've watched my IROC roll over 2x's. I hope someone who is doing this mod is listening. If I fork out $400, I don't think that is too much to ask.

I'm not sure when the truck speedos changed to six digit mileage from five. I know the 91 Suburban I had was six digit but my 86 had only five. Anybody know if there were any non-electronic six digit odometer speedos?

Our '99 Tahoe has the non-electric 6 digit.

Would 80 - 85 Camaro gauges work for this type of conversion?

Yes, but the 80-81 and 82-89 gauges are quite different animals. The auxiliary gauges on the 82-89 are turned 90 degrees mounting stud wise and have smaller irregular shaped faces that don't fit well into the truck dash bezel.

The small fuel gauges - are those rare or otherwise hard to come by?
I had Gary (Tachman) fix my my Tach in the '85. He's a nice guy who does great work. Sent me pix of my tach on his calibration bench. I think he'd be worth the wait. Just my .02

Thanks 68TT, so I need to stay below the 82MY Camaro to make this work. (Note to self.)

Re: C/k truck 7k tach&130 mph cluster 73-87

I'm still thinking that 2nd gen Z28 mph and tach are the ticket, but that is very well done and is a very viable second option.

Now I have three options... Thanks!

Re: C/k truck 7k tach&130 mph cluster 73-87

It looks like he did what I was talking about in the third gen Camaro tach conversion thread and used a stock truck fuel level gauge face as a carrier and installed a third gen tachometer mechanism into it then overlaid the fuel gauge face with tach markings. The way the fuel gauge is wired through the tach and the 7,000 rpm range tells me he is using the third gen tach.

You can see the mounting screws in place of the factory rivets and see the edge of the overlay he used on the gauge face.

This way any warning lamps in the stock fuel gauge location are retained.

I like the one piece auxiliary gauge carrier idea but all you really need is a fuel gauge face that fits into the optional clock location and screw the stock truck fuel level gauge mechanism to it.
