Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

Sorry I posted the pix from my phone and can only post one pix at a time.
After my great grandfather passed the truck was sold to a family friend. They dove it wil little care until the early 90s where it got parked in a yard for ten years. My dad and I had to cut it out of the black berrys a new battery, gas and fuel pump and it drove home. It is all stock orig motor and trans and still runs and drive but it sit nice and dry until I can afford to restore it.

So what do you guys think? I know she needs alot of work... But it's a 75 Indy 500 truck. And as far as I can tell it may be one of two. And it also may be the one that was a prize like the add says....

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

Wow, I love that truck If it were me, I'd bring it back. If you do the same, before you do ANYTHING, document everything on the truck you can, especially the stripes and such (take LOTS of pictures, measurements, etc.). Looks like the truck needs every body panel possible.

Keep us updated on your progress, I want to see how it turns out.

If you ever end up sellin it, let me know please.

1975gmcindy500guy,
Looks to be a cool rare truck, with a heritage!
It also looks to be in good enough shape for a resto.

Oh, and I love the seats!!

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

That's an awaesome piece of Chevy truck history. I would continue on your quest to document it's history.

As far as restoring it goes, I feel it would be virtually impossible to find the original stripe package.

I suggest you look at having the graphics reproduced using modern vinyls.

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

The cab/firewall are very good the floors are solid and I plan to repair as much sheet metal as possible. All the decals were hand cut by a shot that I belive to still be around I plan the take the truck to the best decal place I can find and have them reproduce them the best they can before I start taking anything apart. It is all around very solid frame and core support and inner fender wise. I want to replace the doors with good originals and replace the right fender and fix the left I want to take apart the bed and save what I can but put a new floor in. Like I sed I am going to take the time and save all I can so I still have the same truck when I am done

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

Very cool. I'm not sure I've seen a 75 before.

Engine doesn't look original in blue. They were still orange in 75. These pics are definitely going in the archive...

As far as buckets being rare, it depends on your definition of rare. Not very many trucks had them, but they made a lot (a million?) of these trucks so there are a lot out there that did.

What is the compressor for?

Thanks for sharing.

The compressor was for aftermarket air shocks it the rear it was added right after the truck was purchased by my great grandfather
it will be removed as it is about the only thing not stock

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

Yo! What a cool truck!
You've got some work to do, but what a piece of history you'll have when you're done,...and a great truck, besides.
As stated, take pics and measurements of it all,...I used my Sony digital to video my truck and it's donor before I began work, and that even gave me views at different angles. Then a set of stills for resolution, and you'll be ready to start work.
Geeze, I probably watched that race in 1975!
Please keep us up to date with a build thread!
Merry Christmas! Todd.

Very cool. First one I have seen that was not an advertisement picture. Glad you are wanting to restor it to it's glory. Looks like it worked hard during it's life.

I asked my dad and he told me that he has known the truck since new and that the engine has never been painted the only thing it has had done was a valve job and cam but he said he did not think the motor was removed. and he knows for a fact that it is the original bottom end maybe blue heads and covers were put on off another motor I will see what color the block is but I think the block is blue also...

Cool truck thx for pics.

Here is a cool youtube video of that race.

Check-out this crash.

There is a Chevy service truck in photo.

Here is something else (club newsletter) I ran across that has pics of all indy trucks going back to 1925.

Re: 1975 gmc Indy truck

IndyGuy,

I just want to say it's AWESOME that you were able to save this truck from it's demise, Not only because it's rare but it was owned by your great grandfather. It would surly be a great tribute to him that you will bring it back to it's heyday as he once owned it.

When you finish this project, Hmmm.... Maybe a name here.... Project Indy ? ..... You will hold a very special truck.

Good Luck with your build and PLEASE keep us updated with your progress.

Interesting. They lifted all of that right off my old website. At least they gave credit...

Hi 1975gmcindy500guy
Google "Phoenix Graphics" They did/do repro decals for most all GM pace cars/trucks. If you send them pics, they should be able to reproduce the Indy decals to OEM specs. Please keep us posted on your progress.
