Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
yep it's got a 5.5/7 static drop! ha ha
yeah, I have some rust repair done, and some not- I wanted to be able to drive it this summer and didnt have time to get all of that done. did weld up the bed stake holes and the side marker holes. body is faaaar from perfect. drivers front fender has a new lip from a rear bed repair panel about 85% finished. i have rockers and cab corners waiting to go on as well. also needs floor supports and floors (has license plates for floors right now lol) - it's just supposed to be a beater/rat so im not that concerned. yep, paint is spray bombed - first went all the way to bare metal, then used black rust inhibitor, then white primer, then satin green. top is gloss white. all rustoluem. it looks pretty good. good enough for now. eventually im gonna try sanding on it and doing the faux patina. oh, and check out the 1" spikes btween the grilles on the front, I think it looks really cool. Thanks man!!! if you look at the pic I just loaded, you can see it still needs cab corners bad after i knocked out all the po's bondo- i took the whole body down to bare metal cause I wanted to know what was hiding there! |

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
Still runnin inner fenders?!
That rustoleum lay pretty good? Use a DA to go bare metal? No bondo or nothin? How many cans did it take? And ya know what other colors are offered in satin? I love it! Oh, Ps, what holds the moulding aruond the outside of the grille on? My 68 has some holes in that area..not sure what its for, I like yours...I may go back to a white grille.. Whats next?

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
no, no inner fenders- didnt want to run them so I didnt even try.
yeah the paint is really nice- it's a new kind, 2X coat, or something like that- it comes out of the can really nice. There were a lot of cool colors, I bought it all at Lowe's- can't really rememer how many cans, wasn't too bad because the 2X means it covers twice as good. I think there are small little nuts that hold the grille loops on (like the same ones that hold on the emblems and the hood letters Whats next is putting a new gas tank in it (has a bunch of rust/junk getting pulled thru the fuel filter) and a new windshield and then getting it on the road more full-time. Long term is pulling the cab and fixing all the rust issues then finally in a few years bagging it and laying it on the ground. Already removed the bed center section and the rear wheel tubs- it will either get dropmembers or a front Z and big notch in the back- but thats a few years down the road... |

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
yeah, i wetsanded it a bit after the final coat.
used the da and 3m discs on the diegrinder to take the paint off- it took a while to say the least! I wish the po wouldnt have done all the crappy bodywork and primer job on it, i would have loved to just drive it with the original paint, it's a 50th |

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
looks cool, a few other guys are running this static drop and one says his inner fenders worked? sounds like maybe he is running less drop than he thinks, mine is so far from that point I wouldn't know yet, white grille looks great, going that route myself now or possibly paint matching the grey my 338 wheels are, gonna watch this build the bullet centers are a good classic touch

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
ok, got the windshield out a couple nights ago- started wire wheeling the window channel getting ready to paint it and get the new glass installed. New fuel tank and sender came today via ups- gonna work on that on saturday. Got a bunch more smaller parts as well- only suspension parts i didnt replace before were the rag joint, pitman arm and idler arm - so i got those. more work coming soon for ol' Gurdy!

Ok, put some fuel in the new tank and pulled her out into the sun for a bit. It's nice here today!!!
She's really dusty, and still haven't had a windshield put back in yet. |

I LOVE it!
Nice here too! Ya need some headlight winker covers. It'd match the rest of the truck I think. If I was closer Id help ya on the windshield.

Re: Mike J's ratty 68 Longbed project
I really want a beat up/rusty white front bumper. That's what im running on the rear- left the old bumper stickers and everything on it - keep looking it the classified section but keep missing them. Want an old gun rack as well, I think it would look cool - and im looking for a 62 Bel Air steering wheel - that's about it for now, still doing little projects on her, need to get her registered and tagged...
