Re: 68 C20 Build.
Did a little work today. Got my fan shroud late Friday from sheet metal shop. They had bent it wrong somehow and made it an inch too tall. They had already closed, but he left it on his fork lift and trusted me to leave the check under the seat. Didn't want to hold me up for the weekend. Thanks. Anyways, sawed a cut in it and welded it back up. Not bad for teaching myself how to weld aluminum on a 2 inch scrap off the side filler piece. Kept blowing the ckt breaker in the fuse panel though. Does it draw more current welding aluminum in AC than mild steel in DC. Got it all done, painted and mounted, then wired up and tested with the HP tuners. Should be no overheating problems.
Still got to find a cruise control switch I like. Might just make a panel switch for in the dash. |

Re: 68 C20 Build.
Also set my tire size and gears in the PCM, 31 inch tires, 4.56 gears. Took it for test drive. It shows at 70 mph I'm turning 2150 rpm. Does this sound about right. Is this a good rpm range for the 5.3 for highway cruising. Thanks.

Re: 68 C20 Build.
cool build, those headers look awesome,
rpms seem to be a bit low for the 4.56 with 31s at 70. you might want to double check that but of course, I could be wrong about this.

Re: 68 C20 Build.
Got my el cheapo cruise control switch in and wired up, works great. $6 worth of switches, some used wire, connectors and heat shrink, soldered and a 90 sheet metal bracket mounted to the dash. No relays required. Took for a test drive up Mt Nebo to verify my fans were goiung to keep it from overheating. No problems.

Re: 68 C20 Build.
Thanks, I like them too because they were cheap. I need to put a spacer on the back axle thought to move them out so I can fit the cap on.
Got my new homemade cold air intake on. Works good. Made from 2 90's from big truck exhaust, 4". Painted with hammered metal black from Rustoleum. Also got passenger electric window in and switch wired into homemade oak door panels. These will get upholstered later with the bench seat. |

Re: 68 C20 Build.
question.....what did you use for the steam vent line? Also, it looks like both heater hoses are tapped...you have 2 vent lines?

Re: 68 C20 Build.
I just tapped the one for a steam vent. I put a brass barbed fitting in one cap and sealed it with JB weld. Has worked for 20k miles in my S10 blazer now this truck. The other hose already had a fill and vent tee in it when I bought the truck. Been too lazy to change the old hoses out. And yes it runs better with the intake this way. Or were you asking if it runs better with the wood door panels?

Re: 68 C20 Build.
Got my new seat cover on and back to the house. Looks OK for a 70's cover on a 68 bench. Also finished getting my Dana 60 with posi and 3.54 gears cleaned up, new seals, bearings, fluid and painted. Gotta finish new break lines and put the hardware back on, into the old truck.

Re: 68 C20 Build.
I believe the window kit was A1 Electrics 67-72 kit. They fit perfect. I still need to get all my mechanicals fixed and working right, then I'll start on the body work, get the door seals all replaced. Summit sells the electric window kits the cheapest I believe.

Re: 68 C20 Build.
I really like what you've done to your truck. I was hoping to find a 67 or 68 similar to yours but my 69 presented itself to me first.
I was wondering do you have white/saddle listed on the SPID for the original paint ? oh nm i found it in Post 15.. Quote:

Re: 68 C20 Build.
I used a Lokar cable shifter setup for on the column. It's kinda of not the best choice for my setup because my engine is set back farther. I kinked the first cable while working out of town. Almost left me stranded at work. I reversed the cable assembly and its worked OK . I did order and have a new longer cable from Lokar so its not so tightly bent as the old cable. I also just made my own bracket to line the cable up better with the tranny shifter. It wasn't lined up very well with the Lokar bracket. Thanks Bolibib. Yeh, Saddle and Ivory on SPID. 521 code I believe. It will be Camaro 68 Anniversary Gold and white when painted. Already have paint, but my body work/painter died of heart attack back 2 days before last Christmas. Gotta learn how to paint and do bodywork now. Jim

Hey Jim, I came across this thread while searching for '68 327 carb numbers. In post #14 member "msgross" asked if you could post up the numbers off of the 327 manifold and carb but I don't think you ever got around to posting them. If you still have the 327 and have time could you post the numbers? I just purchased a '68 CST and the carb was missing. I would like to find a carb with the correct numbers if I can. Not a big deal but it would sure help me out. Thanks. LockDoc

Re: 68 C20 Build.
Been a while since I hit my own build thread. Sorry LockDoc. My Electric Life Drivers power window unit quit working, gears stripped on driver side after 5 years. They want more than $100 for replacement motor. Anybody have better experience with different brand? Thanks. Jim
