I had one of those orange stepsides (454) shortly after getting to my first base in 75. Got it from someone on base when it was 6 months old. I wish I owned a camera back then, but all my money went into gas, beer, and smokes .

Re: High School Trucks!

This is a great post. I have to find pics of my old 64 Chevy and scan them in. AHH!! truck memories. There was this red head one time...well that's probably for another kind of board. If that truck could talk. Now I really have to find the pics.

Re: High School Trucks!

These trucks were new when I was in High School. We didn't have rich kids who's mommy and daddy bought new cars for back then. My girlfriend's dad was a the head brain surgeon at Johns Hopkins and a retired high ranked Naval surgeon. The man was rich, had a huge cabin yacht, home on the water, and vacation home in Martha's Vineyard. He got Nancy an old '62 Volvo, which really suited her. I got myself a '56 VW and hopped it up. Within a year after graduating (73) I bought a '72 short bed off the OK Used Car lot...no pictures.

Re: High School Trucks!

I drove cars in high school. I got my first truck in 1979 (new). Been driving them since. I always wanted to restore a vehicle but thought it would be a car. Turns out that it will be my 70 gmc.

Re: High School Trucks!

Here is a picture of my truck in highschool (late 80s). Parked it for 10 years then worked it over to the 2nd pic. Will never sell it, too many memories, blood, sweat & tears.

Re: High School Trucks!

the two in the mud are from the fall of 2000 i had just turned 16 and finished the powr-loc install in the front 60. as it turns out i was still self educating and had incorrectly installed the right lockout internals and rendered my now "posi" front useless. it was only a short walk back to the farmstead for a tractor. haha. the truck was like this for maybe a year after the pics then i might have ran twice more in the following 11 years. that little guy next to the back bumper is me in '88. judging from the stalks on the ground it was harvest so i would have been 4. the truck was already 16

sorry about the dopey picture of a picture. my sisters made the collage for my HS graduation and i decided to keep it.

in its current state.

the truck was purchased new by my grandpa and i am the second owner. when he died in 96 my grandma knew i wanted it and gave the truck to me.

i also had an 88 k2500 that i drove most of the time in HS. i dont think i have any pics but it was just a shiny black farm truck that i beat the snot out of

these were my college trucks. i sure wish i had kept them.

this was a 72 k2500 with a 70 body. swapped a nv4500 into it and it was a decent cruiser. i traded it for a 67 camaro... dont have that anymore either

this was a 72 SWB k10. drove it for a couple years in college. sold it when i moved to wyoming. my wife wished we had this one more than i do. this was my DD when we started dating and it did a lot of dougnuts and burnouts that she remembers fondly.

Re: High School Trucks!

Here is my high school truck and its still my daily driver. I got it on February of 07, my junior year.

I have done a few things to it over the years and this is pretty much its current state, but I have chrome door handles now

Re: High School Trucks!

I don't have any pics but I drove my dad's '73 k20 in HS. He bought it brand new and had it up until 1998 when he got a 1999 silverado which he'll probably drive till he croaks.

I wish I had pics of the one he had before, it was a red and white 71 c20 but it had problems from the get go (dont remember what) and traded it off for the 73.

Re: High School Trucks!

When I was 17 and in high school, I saved some money from my part time job to buy a truck. I looked at three trucks...a ranger (hated it), a 72 K10 and an 89 S-10. I narrowed it to the K10 and the S10 and my dad approved the S-10 (V8 vs. 4 banger) so that's what I got. Ever since then, however, I knew I'd get a 67-72 someday.

Below are the before, after, and after I sold "Purple 1" pictures. When I sold it in 2002 my wife agreed that someday I could replace it which finally happened last December when I got my 72 SWB C10.

Re: High School Trucks!

I started working on my truck when I was 15.... drove it all the way through high school and $3.50 a gallon gas.... I'm 21 now and I still drive it on weekends but my little c1500 handles the $3.50 a gallon gas better because it gets 19-20mpg the best I ever got out of the 70 was 12.5mpg at 60mph with a tailwind

it has gone through...

3 motors.... about to change the current setup too

3 different kinds of transmissions... not counting all the broken 700r4s

3 rear-ends..... and actually I'm putting rear end #2 back in soon

it started out a 350/th350/3.08 and for now it's a 383/SM465/3.73

The truck when I was 16

17 year old me proud of my new motor...... a vortec 350 that lasted 6 months due me missing a couple of flat lobes on the cam..

I have soooo many pictures but I don't want to hog this thread
