Well, keep in mind I'm a semi professional powdercoater. I powdercoat everything I own. But, trailer hitches are prone to rust anyway and you live up north somewhere. I'd assume you want maximum rust protection. POR15 does that in spades. I'd POR it and paint it with whatever paint you like best.

I will add that the first time I used it years ago I got some on my arm in a couple places and I found that if you cleaned it up right away with Lacquer thinner it came off easily.
I will also add that a spot on the back of my arm that I missed would NOT come off with anything (including lacquer thinner) after the stuff cured.

I like the stuff but you know what they say, "Rust never sleeps" it will win eventually.

As long as you wash it off with solvent immediately while it's still wet, it's ok. But when it dries, you're stuck with it for a while! Acetone will take it off you while it's still wet.

the best way to paint over POR15 is while it's still tacky apply the top coat// i used to spray rylon enamel over por 15 on my trailers worked real well and bonded better that way

Might as well do the whole floor.....and under the cab, and in the doors, in your fender buckets, cab corners, under the bed, frame, around the squirrel cage, take out the windsheild and POR15 where it normally starts to rust, dog, cat, etc, etc...... I put that SH*T on everything. Amazingly a quart did everything I just mentioned, applied with a brush!!! One thing I did not read in this thread is that less is more and that is very true with this product. It will bubble and look rough if you put it on thick. If you just get coverage on the metal, no more no less, then you will have a slick as ice surface that will be perfect for painting with a little scuffing.

Another thing to consider is the fumes. It will get to you
after awhile. It is good to apply it in a well ventilated
area and wear a mask.

I have a 55 gal. metal drum over my well head. I got tired
of them rusting out after a couple of years. I took a good drum;
blasted it and painted it inside and out with POR. I top coated the
outside, within the time window, with a good oil base enamel.
It has been there for a least 8 years. It has been exposed to
everything that nature dishes out including Hurricane George
and Katrina. I checked it recently and it is still solid. There is
a little surface rust around the top of the rim and on the top
which is actually the bottom. Some water will pool on the top
even though I notched it for drainage. There is no rust anywhere
else.This might give you an idea of how long it will last.

I have never had any luck storing it after opening the lid.

I did the metal work on an old LaSalle a few years ago. The owner
wanted it coated with POR. He had some POR in the original
gallon can. He had used the "Screw-method" to remove what he
used. It had been stored about three years and was still good.

I'm heading to Nevada next month and want to buy some POR-15 on the trip cause its half the price of what it is here in Canada. Can someone suggest a good place to buy the stuff like a good Autoparts chain store as I'm sure Wally world doesn't sell it.

I bought mine at a PPG Auto Paint store. You might try the POR website, if not, Google it.

Try the POR website to find a vendor. None of the major parts chains carries it.

I'm a little curious about the fumes myself. Charcoal mask or fresh air system? Or, just a well ventilated area.

I bought mine at my local NAPA store. They usually have it on the shelf but happened to be out of it at that time. It came in the next day. $41.95/qt, It seems to be about the same price everywhere.

I just use it in a well ventilated area and don't hang around when I'm done painting.

Question.

I've applied the "Marine Cleaner" to the Floor Pan and have rinsed and letting it Dry.

The NEXT step is the "Metal Prep" which in the instructions, state after it is put on (and rinsed off), that it shpould be "BONE DRY" before applying the Por 15!!!

So my question is, its 4:00pm here on the Left Coast. The Truck is in the Garage, but its 58 Degrees and cooling off fast. My thought process was to put on (and rinse off) the "Metal Prep" and let it dry thoughly overnight and apply the POR 15 tomorrow.
That way everything is "BONE DRY" and there is supposed to be Higher Humidity tomorrow, which I'm told, Por 15 likes.

Would it be OK to let it dry for 24 hours BEFORE I put on the POR 15?
Will the Zinc in the "Metal Prep" still be good after drying/sitting there that long?

I don't see a problem with that. It may flash rust a little bit but that would actually be good because the POR-15 will actually stick better.

Put on the POR 15 Today.
Went really smooth and is still in the Drying Pricess (after the 2nd Coat).
