Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Yeah you know I think the Edelbrock tall valve covers are possibly the tallest covers made. The ones I've used are the old M/T's and the GMPP chrome steel "POWER" valve covers. I've not had any problems running a large cap HEI in the rear position though.

I used aftermarket trans x-member and had a new driveshaft made to fit the combo.

A distributor solution is to run a Pertronix with an external coil. Uses the small cap like a points dizzy. Just a thought......

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Using the front holes and swapping to sbc v8,is anyone running a th350 tranny w/any problems? The reason I ask is because on mine I discovered that the previous owner had installed the engine perches backwards i.e. left on right, right on left which puts the engine about an inch back.I found this out when I tried to remove the driveshaft and couldn't slip the shaft forward to remove the rear u-joint from the rearend yoke. There was no room to slide forward, how the hell he got the shaft installed in the first place is beyond me.Well I removed the perches and swapped them to their correct places and everything fell in place, kind of.I can't get the perches to fall in place on the front holes,is their a trick to this or should they fall in no problem?

If the perches are the orginal ones that were mounted in the rear holes, they should line up with the holes in the top rail of the frame. They will NOT line up with the hole in the crossmember. You would have to retdrill those yourself.

I ran a TH350 with my 6cyl. I used the orginal mounts with in the rear holes. I made my own crossmember for the tail housing that bolted to the frame rails and removed the factory crossmember under the bellhousing. I had a driveshaft made to fit though...

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Get a set of 68-71 big block frame stands. They are easy to find over on the 67-72 section of the parts board. Expect to pay about 75 to 100 dollars for them.

They will mount in the front set of holes in your frame and crossmember.

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

glad i searched & found this...another member who lives in my area had pointed out that my engine mounts were in the 6 cyl. location (rear holes)....i have a 327 that was installed by the PO...the original was a 283...so, i was about to ask what all geometry it would throw off by moving to the front holes, thinking mine were in the wrong spot...now i really don't see any reason to move...but i like for things to be how they're supposed to be...so, i guess i can just leave them alone

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Very good info here, I'm currently in the process of installing a 327 in my '64. Due to the shifter location of the trans going in (MY6) I'd like to use the forward set of motor mount holes. Less cutting into the floor.

Is it possible to use the inline 6 perches/towers and mount the V8 in the forward holes?

We tried it and it turned into a wrestling match that we didn't win.

I see there might be different perches depending if it's a l6 or V8. Maybe I need to track some down for the V8? Thanks

explain how it turned into a wrestling match and what I6 was in there before.
230,250 and 283 perches are the same

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Okay wrestling match is poor description. We initially dropped it in the rear holes and it bolted up great. Slid the perches forward and couldn't get the motor mounts bolted to the perches.

I'm assuming this is because the frame narrows towards the front. Not sure. Just wondering if this has been done?

Aggie91, do you know if the black perches from the original post are from a power glide? I'm thinking that is what dictated the factory using the front or rear bolt holes. And maybe if the front bolt holes were used, the perches were different.?

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

After some digging around the site, it looks like some 67-72 perches will allow use of the forward holes.

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

You must use the '67-'72 engine mount brackets for a small block. Those are designed to bolt in, in the forward location.

In the '63-'66 trucks, ALL 230/250, 292, 283 and 327's were installed in the rear location from the factory. The only engine mount that was different is the passenger side of the 292.

Thanks John, it now looks like I'm gonna need to move the shifter ahead a few inches regardless, so may just leave the engine in the rear holes.

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Dracko,

Just saw your question. I do not know for sure what trans the truck had that I got those mounts from. I ended up not finishing that conversion back in 2010. I hope to get it back in the shop this year to get it in driving condition, maybe with a LS swap...

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

I'm clear as mud-.I'm down to the frame and plan on installing my 350 with a msd and a 700r4 in my 65 c10. I was just going to use the stock engine perches in the rear holes.. Am I good or does it have to be front cuz I pulled out a 6 cylinder mounted in rear holes. I don't have my cab here to check clearance, so I planning on following y'all's advice. Thanks

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

they should be in the rear holes. some move it forward and claim distr clearance for the reason. the sheet metal lip protruding down from the firewall does give a clearance problem sometimes with a 700r4. it may have to be modified for clearance with a low hump floor

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Yes the rear location is where a small block as well as 230/250 I6 should be. As Ron said, sometimes the lip where the firewall meets the floor can cause an issue with the 700R4's.

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Hello, I am in the middle of replacing a 454/700r4 combo with a LT1/NP440. I am having issues finding the correct orientation for the z-bar. After reading through this, I am fairly confident that it is due to the placement of the engine. Can somebody here confirm that these are in fact V8 perches and simply in the I6 position? They appear to be symmetrically opposite geometry to each other.

Re: Frame Side Engine Mounts

Yes those do appear to be the '67-'72 small block engine mount brackets installed in the rear (I6) location.

That would make sense. Its a shame that I just cut a hole in the floor for the shifter

It's all good though. It will make the linkage a whole lot less challenging.
