Re: I "home chromed" my 73 grill

if you guys dont want to go to the trouble of having to brush on the aircraft paint remover, they sell one in a spray bottle at the auto parts as well. the bottle looks like spray paint but in a taller bottle, it says aircraft paint remover in the front.

Oven cleaner can be used as well.

Adam I love those wheels, but you already know that. What do you think about the finish? I have heard mixed reviews,

So, excuse me, I can be a bit slow on the intake. But you didn't actually crome it, you just stripped the paint?

The polished finish they sell werent very impressive they looked like they were used already. The chrome looks awesome much better than the boyd wheels I had a few years back.

Yep, just wipe the paint off and the chrome is underneath, just needs a quick polish. If you are going to do a chevy grill I would leave the center egg crate area and just do the surround. Its taking forever to get into all of the corners of that grill and I think its just going to be a PITA to clean.

I would but it's not much to look at right now as most of the paint has been sanded down. The rims wont be installed for 3-4 weeks at least, I just ordered the fronts yesterday and it'll be a couple weeks before I have the $$ for tires.

Why are you changing the paint on your truck? I think it looks pretty nice right now

That's pretty much what I heard too. I just don't know how the chrome would look on my truck. I'll let you show me before I make a decision

I'm working on a chevy grille right now hopefully I'll be done with it before the weekend but I think I'll stay with the gmc grille. I'm not done with the 73-74 swap so please look past the metal behind the grille that needs painted, little off center ...

Very nice! I might have to try this one my '73 GMC grill. I have 2 and always wondered why the chrome was coming through on the other one.

Re: I "home chromed" my 73 grill

I know this is an old post, but I just picked up a chrome gmc grille and am interested in removing the paint. How long did you leave the stripper on the grille before taking it off, and how long after you got all the paint off did you wait to polish it? Thx.

To be clear, all grilles are NOT chrome underneath! I have a 74 GMC grill that is black plastic under the paint. Don't go messing up a nice grille unless you are sure!

The two GMC grilles I have are not chrome either.
I'd love some details on this grille though...
