Rear Ends

Went with an 2WD S-10 Blazer rear in mine (3:42 & Posi) but do the math for what size wheels you want to run. The 2WD rears are narrower than the 4WD ( 4WD closer to an early Nova or Camaro width) Put your wheels and tires underneath the truck if you're not sure, set them up where you want them to sit and measure from wheel to wheel ( inside where the axles bolt up). You can find all the different widths of rearends if you do a little online homework! I Googled all the stuff that I did long before I got it just to be sure.

Is there a difference between a ford 6 cylinder rear end and a 8 cylinder rear end. I found a 1998 Explorer rear end out of a 6cyl at a local dismantaler and its $200 less than one out of a 8cyl

Can't help you out there... but if its over two hundred dollars period you might consider finding a different junk yard

have you looked at pick n pull in Oakland? i got mine for $160 in Rancho cordova on a sale day.
By the looks of it on their website, there are 4 96-98 explorers at the Oakland lot, and 5 at the Newark lot.
You shouldnt have to pay anything more then $200

I checked out the P-n-P website they have like 15 96-98 Explorers and from what there price page says they want $150 I might have to take a trip up there

Hmm, so far I have pulled out 2 of them and I dont think we used that many tools. I remember that we did have a full socket set, open end wrenches, heavy wire cutters or needle nose pliers to undo the e brake cable, long crow bar to use leverage in getting the thing out from under the car, and hammer and punch to remove the driveshaft.

Getting there and figuring out you dont have the right tools is half the fun though, I had a full socket set the first time and sure enough, the one size I didnt bring was needed for like 6 bolts lol.

make sure you have a 12mm 12 point socket to take the bolts out that holds the driveshaft in. IIRC the u bolts take an 18 mm. better take a deep well just incase. i forgot what the sway bar nut sizes are, but its all metric.

Thow your cutting torch bottles on the back of your truck and go have at it.

My guys have always pulled mine for me. the cut the whole back half off a frame for me once.. whatever is easiest i reckon.

hmm fire hazard i guess? usually crap like this is setting down in the dirt/mud. better bring a floor jack or two. maybe you could talk one of the fork lift operators into picking it up for you?

sounds like a lot of work but an impact wrench will cut your work into a fraction of the time. we have a portable air compressor and a generator we haul around to change skidder tires and such. Not really feasible if you dont have access to these parts but if you do throw them in the truck!

I have access to a cordless impact gun so tools I need are full socket set, crow bar, wire cutters, hammer, punch, wrenches, jack. This list sound right? oh and a lucky assistant

You more then likely wont need a jack, if they are the same in the bay as they are in the sacramento area then all the cars are propped up on welded rim stands and you have access to either wheel barrels or truss like cherry pickers to get them out of there.

No it's the wrong bolt pattern.

I'm putting a 79ish disk brake posi Trans Am rear end under the 48 this time simply because I have it and want four wheel disk. I haven't measured the mounting surface to mounting surface distance of that rear against the Nova/Camaro rear that is under it now.

I have a 76 Cadillac Seville ten bolt at the house that is 5 on 4-3/4 and is a bit wider than the Nova rear ends but still is a leaf spring rear end. High geared puppy though and it does have the big flange for the driveshaft to bolt to. It might be good choice for a truck with a fairly stock 350/350 who wants a great highway rig. That might go in the truck I am gathering pieces for for a build it an sell it rig.

I guess I didnt phrase that correctly. Can you put GM rotors on a ford 8.8" that has had the axle's redrilled to a GM bolt pattern. Will the rotors fit in the caliper? The ford rear end comes with 11" rotors does anyone know what cars come with 11" rotors

I bet the off set on the hat of the rotor would be different. I would just redrill the rotors at the same time I redrilled the axles. On my 38 I have 5 on 4 1/2 on the back and 5 on 4 3/4 on the front, but the wheels I have have both bolt patterns on them. There are other wheels that have both also, keystones come to mind off the top of my head, and dad had a set of wire wheels on a 66 mousestang that had both patterns also.

I got my rear end today it's out of a '98 Explorer I think it was 4x4 with disc brakes

Anyone know where I can get the Splash Shields the ones on my rear end were bent.
