good looking build so far. newer beds look better on this body style than the 67-72 thats for sure but they look good on some not all. might look good on yours

I have to admit, as a 4x4 guy, it's making me tear a little to thing this truck may be dropped. If I found that clean of a truck here in Texas I might have had to resort to illegal things to acquire it. It has everything I want EXCEPT the motor; axles, transfer case. WOW that is a find. I am definitely subscribed to this one. Got to love the GMC's. I have a '74 GMC Jimmy. GREAT score there buddy!

Nice truck! I can't wait to see the end result... The 427 is b!tchen!! I love that old intake and valve covers.
As for the later model bed, I think it will look good. The fender openings are similar enough and the body lines match enough to make it look right. I've seen those beds on older 60-66's and 67-72's, and to me, they look wrong. Good luck!!

A guy at work wants this block very badly and has offered a built up 454 in running condition in exchange for the block and parts "as is". the temptation is strong. I am looking at about $1500 to $2000 to get this 427 right and running.

Sorry to hear about the problems on that motor. Even though the 427 would be cool to have, I think I would trade him for the running 454. Especially just seeing what Horsepower TV did on a "budget build" that aired this morning.

not sure what your plans were on the 4x4 side but...if you'd like to make it permanent and clean up the floor at the same time...a NVG-149 AWD transfer case would get you there. Its the best AWD case available IMHO and has shown to withstand some serious horsepower. The nice thing about it is that it is a full time mechanical AWD, using a viscous coupler to transfer 38% to the front wheels and 62% to the rear...unless of course traction is needed differently and it can transfer up to 100% to the rear...or 100% to the front. A benefit in a truck is that the front wheels now help "pull" the truck through the corner, making it corner better. These AWD transfer cases have even proven to be better in sand and snow then 4WD.

Update: Project Ranch Hand
Well the tear down is nearly complete on the 73 GMC SWB. The 454 is here and checks out just fine. A good solid 450HP High Torque motor.
After a little cleanup on the firewall and inside under the dash it is time to sandblast the frame and start to work on the re-build. I am not going to lift the truck and in fact will remove the extra spring leafs the PO had put in. This will allow about 2" of sag that I will adjust back with air bags at all 4 corners. Parked it will sit nice and low while on the highway it will be at normal ride height and if I want to go off the road I can take it up even more. I will put on some nice aggressive highway tires that will give me a full wheel well look.

I've been playing around with the idea of the newer bed and I decided it wasn't for me, but one of the things I kinda played with in Photoshop is to take some of the lower trim from a 88-98 and modify it for your truck, it seems to help tie the truck together better.
