The new box would probably require some tweaking to look perfect but it could be done.

By the way sweet find!
WOW, thanks for that link it is what I have in mind and didn't know how the two would look together. That answers my questions.

I was told this Project had a L-72 427 425HP, It did not.
It does have a 427 block and parts from various 427 motors. It will end up with a nice strong 454 in the end.
It has not been run for 20+ years

Re: 20 years later

I have to admit, as a 4x4 guy, it's making me tear a little to thing this truck may be dropped. If I found that clean of a truck here in Texas I might have had to resort to illegal things to acquire it. It has everything I want EXCEPT the motor; axles, transfer case. WOW that is a find. I am definitely subscribed to this one. Got to love the GMC's. I have a '74 GMC Jimmy. GREAT score there buddy!

Re: 20 years later

Nice truck! I can't wait to see the end result... The 427 is b!tchen!! I love that old intake and valve covers.

As for the later model bed, I think it will look good. The fender openings are similar enough and the body lines match enough to make it look right. I've seen those beds on older 60-66's and 67-72's, and to me, they look wrong.

Good luck!!

Well this 427 has turned out to be a problem. What was first billed to me as an L-88 turned then to a L-72 and now a L-Nothing.

The block and one head are the correct match for the 72. The other head does not match and in fact is even a different size combustion chamber!

The cam is not a Chevy cam but a weak Crane grind.

The block has been bored over .030 I will need to go farther to clean up one hole. How far I don't know and I don't know if I will have to sleeve it in fact. It has some rust pitting from standing with an open valve for 20 years.

The crank is an over the counter replacement crank, for a 427 but not out of this block or any block. They were sold over the counter or in a crate motor only.

Most of this I can handle and even expected to to deal with but the fact it doesn't even have a set of heads that match has bummed me out a bit.

A guy at work wants this block very badly and has offered a built up 454 in running condition in exchange for the block and parts "as is". the temptation is strong. I am looking at about $1500 to $2000 to get this 427 right and running.

Sorry to hear about the problems on that motor. Even though the 427 would be cool to have, I think I would trade him for the running 454. Especially just seeing what Horsepower TV did on a "budget build" that aired this morning.

Re: 20 years later

not sure what your plans were on the 4x4 side but...if you'd like to make it permanent and clean up the floor at the same time...a NVG-149 AWD transfer case would get you there. Its the best AWD case available IMHO and has shown to withstand some serious horsepower. The nice thing about it is that it is a full time mechanical AWD, using a viscous coupler to transfer 38% to the front wheels and 62% to the rear...unless of course traction is needed differently and it can transfer up to 100% to the rear...or 100% to the front. A benefit in a truck is that the front wheels now help "pull" the truck through the corner, making it corner better. These AWD transfer cases have even proven to be better in sand and snow then 4WD.

I saw that show also. I don't think I would build to that level but 400+HP would be just fine with me.

Update: Project Ranch Hand

Well the tear down is nearly complete on the 73 GMC SWB. The 454 is here and checks out just fine. A good solid 450HP High Torque motor.

After a little cleanup on the firewall and inside under the dash it is time to sandblast the frame and start to work on the re-build.

I am not going to lift the truck and in fact will remove the extra spring leafs the PO had put in. This will allow about 2" of sag that I will adjust back with air bags at all 4 corners. Parked it will sit nice and low while on the highway it will be at normal ride height and if I want to go off the road I can take it up even more. I will put on some nice aggressive highway tires that will give me a full wheel well look.

Well I have been moving forward on the idea and found a bed in great condition. Like you said it takes some tweaking to make it fit right but here is what it looks like now.

I also did the rear axle flip, removed 3 leaves from the springs and added air bags on the rear so I can level it out later on.

The gas tank is custom made to fit in where the spare tire was and tuck up tight under the bed.

Re: 20 years later

I've been playing around with the idea of the newer bed and I decided it wasn't for me, but one of the things I kinda played with in Photoshop is to take some of the lower trim from a 88-98 and modify it for your truck, it seems to help tie the truck together better.
