Stack...or not to stack - That is the question!

I vote no on hte stacks as well. Heres a thought I just had. Run it outside the pass frame until you get back where everything is more open. Then run it through the pass. frame rail and back over the axle like normal. Weld in a piece of tube that is larger than the exhaust where it passes through the frame for strength. Maybe even box that part of the frame as well so you don't weaken it. Just me thinking out loud.

I'm with the majority here. No stacks. Personally, I'd cut the frame, reinforce it, and run the exhaust back to the inside of the frame, so you could run it all the way out back. On a side note, I love the fact that you painted your engine seafoam green, as they all should have been painted from the factory.

I would run stacks in a heart beat. Don't do it just because people on here don't like the idea. The majority on here don't like the idea. Go to a diesel site and the majority would like the idea. It just depends on who you ask. I say do whatever you want. But I know I wouldn't want to clean my rim all the time.

I like the looks of stacks on trucks with flatbeds or on lwb steppers, but some people tell me I am different.

I'm jumping in one last time and then that's it. The most important thing is what you like. There are some, hopefully not too many, that think a motor sticking out of the hood is the most retarded thing on Earth. No way that was going to stop me. I love the look of my truck and one or two others do too. Dare to be different. Paint your house pink. Who cares.

Also want to say that the "whatever" color green that motor is looks SUPER cool. Looks like under the hood of a Kenworth. I love it! Not a spot of chrome anywhere.

The only problem I foresee with shortening the stack to below the height of the cab is illustrated below. The exhaust will get caught in the airflow in the bed (blue), rather than flowing away in the slipstream (teal).

So rather than having soot all over a set of wheels, it's on the bed and rear of your cab.

You'll see that even the 'lil red truck' in the post above mine has the stack projected up into the slipstream, above the cab.

Just a possible problem I thought of as I looked over your idea... of course the force of the exhaust would work against this at low speeds, when soot generation is highest, but at high speeds you may run into this problem.

run it out right behind the front tire, that would be awesome. Or point it up, dragster style and blow smoke in the windows of all the rice burners. But seriously I think one stack is cool since it is a diesel, like all the souped up diesel trucks are doing now. A hood stack is only practical on off road trucks, no matter how cool it may be.

I'm not really a stack fan on pickups. If you're gonna use it as a truck, ya have to worry about what you're hauling getting against it. I can attest personally to the fact that a plastic lunch box doesn't survive long when it touches it. My brother melted his down in the bed of his Powerstroke. Also you lose that bed space, even if you caged it to keep stuff at a safe distance from it, you've lost even more space. I'm not entirely sold on the through the frame idea for a work truck either, but it could be built up strong enough to hold. There's been alot of trucks built with just a down turn in the exhaust in front of the rear end. Good luck with what ever you do with it and yes we all wanta see it!

On the engine, it is painted Detroit Diesel Alpine Green since the engine was designed by Detroit Diesel. I wanted an old school look and green would have been the color of a Detroit engine in 1967. She sounds great. I can't wait to hear it with some exhaust wherever I decide to run it. The turbo sounds great!

I'm still trying to decide if I'm going with a stock look with the factory white 17.5" rims that came on the truck, white bumpers and grill or if I'm going to run the 16" rims with simulators, chrome grill and bumpers. I have recently been thinking about 19.5's also. Decisions, decisions!

I have to go with no on the stack. They are getting way over done. On a race truck yea I'd do it, on a street truck I think its getting tacky.

But what ever you want goes.

I think I would drop it under the truck before the axle. If it just a stocker, it wont blow too much soot. Unless you plan on idleing it for long periods.

run some duel 4"out the back with some 8" stack dumps behind the rear wheels turbo's love open pipes and this would give you the the sound of a diesel and the look of a street machine
