Under Bed Gas Tank Suggestions

I went out and dug out the 77 Blazer 25 gallon tank I have and tried fitting it in the frame. Here are the preliminary results.



This is going to take some work to make work right. I am thinking about replacing the rear crossmember with one across the back end of the frame like I had on my other frame. That would allow me to move the tank back about four inches and up about three or four inches. I don't really want the tank hanging down too much below the lower rail of the frame this time.

I went back out and checked the clearance that is available



The top of the kickup for the axle is 3-1/2 inches higher than the frame rail so one could raise the tank that amount and still should be able to clear the bed. I have been thinking about raising the floor of the bed a couple of inches to clear the rear end and C notch (not a massive one) so that could give me more room yet.

I also used the Jimmy/Blazer tank. My tank came out of a 79' Jimmy. It fit great, and works great. I ended up using a 90* elbow to a filler neck in the bed.

can you explain a little more on how you hooked up the gm sending unit .can you post some pics if you have them. i have a 65 mustang tank i want to put in my 51 5 window any info would be great.

Thanks that did help.i wont have a problem with instalation its the gm sending unit in a mustang tank thats bugin me i thought i might be able to use a 64 chevy ll nova sending unit . if anyone knows if this will work please let me know.

I have a 25 gal from a blazer. I had a 40 gal from a burb that i parted out but didn't want to have that much fuel. I found a new blazer tank on cl for $50 so i couldn't pass it up. I also did not want a bed fill tank.

I here alot about using the mustang tank because they fit good, so i bought one and it fits great. ive search every where for info on what sending unit to use but other than a universal unit with no pick up tube cant find any thing about how everyone overcame this problem.hundreds of people say this tank is the way to go, and like i said i have a 65 mustang tank and it fits great. What we need is more info on what sending unit can be used and how it was installed and some pics for those of us that are beginners. i really want to use this tank and this is tearing my nerves up. surely theres a unit that will fit in the stock location. Some of you pros out there please help us out!

This what I did, Sloved two problems now matches my gas gauge ohm's wise and I can always buy another sender if it goes bad and cut it down again. First I made a metal ring to fit my factory sending unit, then cut down the tube and float arm and welded ring to the top of tank I used the gasket as a template to drill for sending unit. The JB weld around the ring is just my cheap insurance for leaks. I also welded up the ford sending uint factory hole. Here some pics just make sure tank has never had gas in it before welding !!!

does anybodt know if there is a difference in the size and shape of ford and chevy locking ring. the reason i ask is because 64-65 chevy ll nova has a very simular sending unit as the 65 mustang and it has a locking ring. does anyone know if this locking ring will fit the mustang tank.

Right on time I am 2 days and 4 wires from asking the same question as I am wiring the 53 extended cab.
I just ingnored this question when we placed the mustang tank, so thanks for bringing this up.

Any more thoughts beside the cut and weld method, as we have gas in the tank for start up and check for leaks !!

Not sure how realistic this is without seeing the parts but my suggestion is:

Cut or grind off all parts of the Ford locking ring that are not necessary for it to engage the tank.

Then modify the Chevy sender to "sit" on top of it as cleanly as possible. I'd pop rivet or sheet metal screw the two together, then JB Weld the cr@p out of it, ala Rude Dude's suggestion. All of this should be doable on the bench, well away from the gas-filled tank.

That's right, only $86 with free shipping! Pretty damn hard to argue with that deal vs. $300-400 at many of the usual aftermarket places and $200+ from Tanks, inc. - my original plan.

Questions:

1. How visible is this tank once the bed and stock rear bumper are on? 10-3/4" deep and I can measure from top flange of frame! but still wondering how noticeable it'll be?

2. Where does that fill pipe come out? In the stock license plate location so a tilt plate will hie it? Or is modification of some kind required? (Guess thats 3 questions, sorry)

3. Comes with a "lock ring" for sending unit - what gives with that? I thought Ford used that setup and Chevy used the standard 5 (6?) hole setup to mount their sending units?

I assume that 1x1 tube frame you made is welded to your frame top flanges?
Then some strap material will wrap under the tank to support it?
Have you any photos of that? Any details to share?

I'm thinking I'd weld some nuts to that 1x1 frame and use strap from Home Cheapo, or some such as my straps (with rubber gaskets of some kind)

Thanks for the photo but my questions remain:

How noticeable is it in terms of hanging down low?

You oriented the filler to the side so have you decided if you'll put a filler door in the fender or possibly put the filer in the wheel well?

What will you do about connecting the sender to the gauge?

Guys, I'd like as close to "pay & play" as possible - meaning an under bed tank that'll bolt right in/connect right up to the stock gauge. I'm willing to pay more, maybe up to say $300 BUT if such doesn't exist, why spend more than the $86 this Blazer tanks costs?

Dan, they do make a sending unit that will work with the stock gauge and an aftermarket tank. The tank I used is bolt in once it is drilled.

It is an easy one day addition for 2 guys and the truck would be back on the road.

As a matter of fact I " THINK" I might even have that correct sending unit laying in a box somewhere in my shop.

Moved gas filler to fender. My tank sits a bit higher so doesn't hang too low.
