Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
LOL, that's no lie!
I still kick myself for selling my dually, but I made BANK on that truck! Sold it to a kid who was in Wyotech in Laramie that has plans similar to yours.

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
Lol I originally called the craigslist seller to buy his 79 crewcab 3/4t but he sold it already. Luckily for me his 19yr old little brother was selling the 81 dually that he had bought from a farmer that used it to pull his horse trailer ever so often. Then it dropped a rod and ruin the head and piston since he didn't want to fix it so i pretty much stole it from him. I have now decided to just put that engine back together then maybe down the road do a 5.3 or 6.0 swap. I will take pics as the engine rebuild comes together in the next couple of days.

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
We've come into a Snag, literally the piston was getting stuck at the top of the cylinder wall, I guess the rod damaged it just enough to create problems. So back to the drawing board. As mentioned above, I bought the truck from a 19yr old kid but Luckily for me his older brother is a wyotech grad and has numerous chevy projects, so I'm buying his spare 454 engine out of a RV motothome with only 70k miles, he already replaced the cam and lifters and we got a holley carb, aluminum edlebrock intake, new heads (since old ones had rod busted through) new distributor, plugs and wires, exhaust manifolds are still good, new water pump, new gaskets obviously. Hopefully BigRed will be able to come home with me sometime this weekend. Plenty of pictures to come...

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
Not much progress, I did get a chrome rear suburban bumper and a back window so I can take off the cab sleeper.
Here are a couple of pix for inspiration... Last edited by BGRAFX; 05-02-2010 at 09:32 PM. |

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
Sleeper cab Is for sale...but I will see if I can find out where it was made. The truck is currently going through an engine overhaul so I will edit this when I get the info.

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

So to further answer the question the old block has been pulled and flushed the radiator, put the water pump in and the heads on the RV block. sprayed the bolts to do the rear bumper swap. Last edited by BGRAFX; 05-05-2010 at 12:25 AM. |

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually
I appreaciate that, the pictures of the truck when you started looked like one that my friend sold a couple years back, they had 2 both red with bunks on them, but he couuldn't remember the brand of them when I asked and they came with the trucks when they bought them so he let them go with them
