I didn't see this mentioned unless I over looked in in the other posts. But,, What about a Gear Vendors under/over drive? A well built TH350 W/ a Gear vendors, is a dang bullet proof tranny combo. not to mention the 3-speed would be a technical 6-speed. The price is a bit more initialy but seems to be a simpler of a setup and once again bullet proof.. Look them up at: http://gearvendors.com/

A TH350 to be rebuilt comparable to a 4l60 is roughly half the price. And most likely you would have to have the driveline reworked anyway. But you wouldn't have to get a different crossmember with the G/V unit. between friends and I, We have had quite a few blowouts with the 700R4s and 4L60's, They are just not as stout as a good ole TH350 or even a TH400. That is at least my plan for the near future with my 71 blazer.

The gear vendors overdrive unit is a good solution but it is quite a bit north of the $1700 figure people are tossing around. AND if you have 4wd, you can only use it when you are in 2wd.

Gear Vendors is the last overdrive you`ll ever need.That`s what I plan for my 4spd`67...eventually.Meanwhile I`ll drive a bit slower and listen to that sweet 327 do it`s thing.If it happens it happens.If not...oh well.

I installed a Gear Vendors overdrive on my 72 C-20 a couple of years ago and it works great. Bought it on Ebay for $1,600. I keep it in "auto" mode so essentially, I have a 4 speed automatic transmission. My Turbo 400 shifts up through all of it's gears then the GV kicks in at about 40 MPH. Made a huge difference in the way the truck drives.
