Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
454 because I got a good deal on it and it should be a pretty easy and straight forward conversion

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
I went the crate 350 route because it was cheap, dependable, and had a warranty.
I want to eventually swap out for either a 383 or some kind of LS platform.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
350 for all of the reasons already listed. Overall it was pretty cheap, tons of aftermarket parts and accessories available, and when backed with an OD trans, like my 700R4, they can get respectable fuel mileage.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
454 because I can
Easy to find, bolts in pretty easy, reasonably priced, and easy to hit 400+ hp with cheap(ish) upgrades. I wouldn't if it was a daily driver though, gas cost is killer. |

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
Had a 305 in mine when I purchased the truck great running motor but not enough for me. Went with a 350 after that much better but still not enough. So now it has a 462 inch big block. All I have to say about it is once you go big block you never go back.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
a hot rodded 292 (roller valvetrain, fuel injection, etc) with a 6 speed manual behind it would be really fun.....great towing power and economy.
the 572 is totally wicked, but a new 6.6 diesel would be a more cost effective route in a truck that does more than just go to shows. the 350 is just too regular for me and the 327 has a shorter stroke (the same as in my 307) and i'd rather have a hopped up 305 because it has the 350 crankshaft. i want a torque monster, not a racy engine in my truck......put the power down lower in the rpm band where i can use realistically. most hot parts that fit a 350 will work on other small blocks too. a q-jet, rv cam and dual exhaust will wake up a 305 and will do a decent job trailer towing. big blocks are killer, but small blocks are easier to get around, weigh less and are more efficient.....stroker motors are a good compromise. for old school.....383 or 400sbc or even a 305/307 w/ stroker crank new school: a 5.3 w/ 4" stroker crank out of the vette z06 7 liter small block. it would be less thirsty than the normal 6.0 but make better power for use in a daily driver truck. i'd love to see one done up! Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
350 in mine from a 1970 Chevy Impala SS. But i would love to down the road swap it out for a LS1, and turn it into a LS6.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
350 here, came with it when I got it. Still in pretty good shape from a rebuild not to long ago. I want a little more. Love the 454, but there's so much to do before I make that leap.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
Using a 350 in my 68 GMC Step. Always had good luck with these motors, I find them reliable and easy to work on.

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
Both my trucks have 400's in them and cant ask for a better combination of horse power/torque without goin all out with a build. the 68 crew cab my dad built has a 454 and ( it could be that its out of a 75 caprice wagon) that motor sucks! both my 400s "seem" to pull alot harder than the 454.......my vote goes 400 small block

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
Mine is a 396 with some mods done to the heads and cam. It sounds really strong, has good torque, good HP but cant pass more than 3 gas stations without wanting to stop.
My son loves it and so do I as we roll into the parts store, 7/11 etc. Just hard to beat the sound of a healthy BB. But, I would prefer to have a 5.7 with F.I. and different trans. I like to drive my truck all I can and its 87 miles round trip for work. Gets a bit expensive. Dusty

Re: Most popular engine for our trucks and why?
383 here, only because it was on sale, and a LS install is much more complicated!
