Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
Update for you Red Nose, I never made it to the car show with the truck.. Ended up had some engine problems with the 305 tried fixing it but I got aggravated and decided to pull the motor. (since I had another going in)
Then a month later i figured out the problem with the 305, it was the fuel pump. Engine going in 355 with vortec heads, 292 lunati bracket master 2 cam, moroso 7 quart pan, etc... Old intake I use to run on this motor. When it was in my camaro. It ran like a champ with it. Super Victor Vortec

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
Next I will paint the motor the same blue with white headers (same color that the truck will be). Or my other idea is painting the engine gold with white headers like "hardwaa's gasser infuenced "66's engine.

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
Work on my old truck really slowed down during the winter.
Alot of irons in the fire lately. I'm in the process of getting my "98 Trans Am ready to sell, currently adding a back patio to the house and a new roof! So when spring time come around should be back on my 66 pretty hard. Next on the to do list: 1. Finish painting engine/headers/bell housing/trans 2. Clean engine bay and frame/chassis 3. Paint engine bay and frame/chassis 4. Install Engine/Trans 5. Convert to disc brake and 5 lug.... looking a CPP's Grand Slam kit 6. Decide what 5 lug wheels to go with In between all this I will sand the body. And the list goes on...

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
well here is the motor progress as of today.
just got these valve covers in. I have a friend with a power coating shop, and I will send him my intake and valve covers to get a clear power-coating on them. I will never have to polish the valve covers and clean the intake again. Still havent figure out if these 1968 camaro 1-3/4 headers will work. But I compared them to my 1-5/8 truck headers and the tubes match the same. Only thing I think I'll have to modify is the collectors. Might need to heat them up with a rose bud and bend them down a bit.

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
I like the fact that it is a family heirloom at this point, and it is getting restored every 20 or so years! Seems like a reasonable timeline for a rig that is driven a lot, if not daily.
I am often amazed after reading a thread when I go back and look at the date of the first post. Wife and I left Lousiana last December, we were posted up at Ft. Polk and have a house in New Llano next to Leesville. We did the engine and tranny swap in my '66 Tempest there. I can only imagine how hard it is for you to find boneyard parts since the EPA mandate that swept through LA some years back. I had to go to Texas to find donors for my Pontiac. My hat is off to you sir, doing this type of stuff down there is immeasureably difficult. One half of the year is too hot and humid, the other half of the year is stupidly cold.... all on top of the Southern approch to getting stuff done sometime between today and the 6th Tuesday of the month.... Looks like you are going to have a fine rig when you are done, please keep us posted !!

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
Thanks for the nice comment , and yes vintage parts are very hard to find around here. I do have a rust free hood and driver side rear fender store away in the barn right now for the truck. I was lucky to find them. I bought them both from a guy in California about 6 months ago.
And yes our 2 seasons (winter and summer) are pretty harsh. Luckily this winter its been pretty warm and it hasn't rain much; so I am able to get alot of work done.

Re: Project 1966 Chevy Stepside with family history
little update on my stepper Finally!
been busy doing things around the new house, but finally was able to work on my truck lately. installed a new fuel sending unit my old one didnt float anymore, rebuilt the hei with a flamethrower kit. seems like my motor runs alot smoother now. about a month ago I changed the flowmaster mufflers to some hooker aerochambers big difference very little drone in the cab. I can talk on the cell and hear with no problems. Also it has a better exhaust note; more of a hotrod/ dragracer sound yesterday I finished up leveling the rear end of my truck. I bought a 2" lowering block kit, but after some measurements I only needed to go 1-5/8". So luckly we have mills at work and I just milled 3/8" off the blocks. now it sits just right. now I just need to make time to drive it next thing on the to do list is start sanding and do a rattle can paint job. Going to roll like that while fixing my rust areas
