The GM V4S is an SM318 Muncie. Here is a picture of a Muncie SM318

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Is it worth the rebuild, or will it still sound like a meat grinder?

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

A rebuild will most likely cost you a minimum of $150. More if you need gears and usually the frist/reverse and idler are always beat up. They cost around $70 for both. They are a good trans for daily driving, they won't take many burn outs or gear banging. But it lasted 40 something years so far. I think the last one I rebuilt was about $395 with bearings, shift levers, 2 gears and seals and my labor. As for noise they are very quite, you do hear a little whine from the first gear when you start off but 2nd and third are just like any other 3 spd.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Does it sound quiet around 60MPH? I'm rebuilding my L6 250 and would least be able to get up to that speed without going deaf in the cab like before.
Can you list all the places you got your stuff off of?

You won't hear it at 60 once its rebuilt.
Mack's Standard Transmission is where I got the bearing and seal kit. I buy the gears and other parts off ebay when I see them at a reasonable price.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Is there some sort of repro manual or guide to go by on the rebuild? Also, is there anything on ebay now?

Actually the NP 833 is the same length as my old saginaw. I didn't need to change shaft. Just a bigger hole in the floor for the shifter. OD with a 2.76:1 rear means 55 mph at darn near idle! I Love It!

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Not sure about this particular trans, but I have gotten parts from anaheim gear. Good quality parts and super nice to deal with. They have a website. google them for there website. I first saw them on Overhaulin' they took a muncie to them for one of those project cars they did.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Thanks barry, I'll give them a call soon. Know where I could get a rebuild manual/diagram? Or any literature for that matter.

I contacted the guys at Anaheim gear, they have the small parts kit. Has anyone seen any manual's/literature for this trans?

That sounds nice. I have 3:73 in the rear now and i haven't got that NP833 in yet but its a lot longer than my muncie sm 460 with the ultra low. I use to have the muncie and 5.13 in the c20 rear before the switch to c10 stuff.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

if it is the stock tranny out of your 67 and its a saginaw, it will have 7 bolts. but remember that earlier saginaws up 'till the mid 60's had 4 bolts on the side cover and first gear was non synchronized. but as others have stated, this is very unlikely to be a saginaw!

personally i only like the shifter on the column with an automatic (car or truck....wasted space otherwise) but with a manual trans both ways are cool. you could put in a period correct auto column (w/ tilt even) and just swap out the number indicator for a retro-looking one that has the position for overdrive (available from some vendors). then you could put in a nice OD trans.

on my 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd with column shifted saginaw, i chose to swap the rear to a more highway friendly 4.10 vs the stock 4.57 and eventually plan to retrofit the borg warner overdrive that was available for the saginaw (bolt in swap w/ no drive shaft cutting). but if my truck had been a floor shift already, i would have ditched ths stock box in favor of a 6 speed w/ dual overdrives.....6th being a .52 ratio for REALLY good highway cruising. i didn't want to cut a hole in my floor either when the route i am taking is cheaper and closer to what the factory would have done.

3.42 x .7 = 2.39 (my dad's '99 burb 2wd that has gotten 22mpg so far)

4.57 x .52 = 2.38

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

I wish it already had a hole in the floor otherwise I would've already got a 2004R rather than have this one rebuilt.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

just swap the column. there are enough auto columns around for our trucks you should be able to pick one up pretty cheap.

i think that 3 on the tree is really fun to drive and different, even if you can't shift it quickly. but i plan to just cruise, go to car shows and tow with my burb so race track abilities are not high priority, although they will be improved when i get my 406sbc installed in place of the original 307. i will say that the 4.10 allows the truck to actually gives me a chance to get from gear to gear before running out of rpms and the q-jet swap in place of the 2bbl really woke up that little v8 but fuel mileage should be better.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

I'm keeping it three on the tree simply because it's fun to drive and I really don't want to alter the truck THAT much unless it was absolutely necessary. It's not currently so I'm probably going to end up keeping it for now.

Does the Muncie SM 318 have syncros for 1st gear.? I got one with my original 3 on the tree 1967 and would like to put it back in.

Truck has a 420 4-speed in it now (reverse to the left and down). I'd like to make it more or less original for a while.

I'm with you...the three on the tree is pretty cool.

Pic of my 3-speed attached. Supposedly original to my 1967 C10 but it has rear mount like a passenger car.

That's absolutely a Muncie SM318. There's a lot of confusion about the differences between Muncie and Saginaw 3 speeds. A quick way to tell is the Muncie has round splined shift shafts while the Saginaw used keyed type of selector levers.

To answer the question above, the SM318 does not have a synchro first gear. You have to come to a stop for it to easily drop into first. I went through all of this when I built my 63 truck and had to learn about these trannys first hand.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I'd like to put the three on the tree back in while I'm enjoying my 250 six and saving/thinking of my eventual driveline but a non syncro first gear would be even more unpleasant than the farmer truck four speed in it now.

Maybe a cheap enough syncro three speed will show up, otherwise I'll just suffer with the four speed.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

I just picked up a 3-speed standard trans out of a 69 c-10 to put in my 67.

The 69 is quite a bit longer than the 67.

I believe the 67 is a Muncie SM318 and the 69 is a Saginaw 343.

They both have 10 spline input shafts but the 67 had a 16 spline output and the 69 has a 27 spline output.

I also picked up the shifter rods but the 69 came with a a 307 and I have the inline 6 so I think the rods will be the wrong length. I also have the 67 shifter rods but it looks like they will be too short as the 69 trans is longer so the shift levers are slightly further back.

Looks like I'll also need a longer speedo cable.

Pictures here for anyone interested.

The 69 is the rusty colored one with the bellhousing still on. The blacker colored one is the 67.

The two shifter rods on their own are from the 67 with inline 6.

A shot of my driveshaft in the truck shows that whoever swapped the tranny from three on the tree to four speed just extended the driveshaft and hooked it straight up to the four speed's output yoke (the four speeds don't have slip yokes they have a splined slip fitting in the driveshaft). So the engine and tranny mounts are the only slip happening.

Re: Is it a Saginaw or muncie?

Also my 1968 bellhousing and tranny have the larger 5 and 1/8" opening vs the smaller 4 and 9/16" pilot bearing hole on the 1967. I thought three speeds stayed with the small opening but I guess not.
