Looking good! Already a big improvement. A 700R4 is a good option but remember it might not work as well with the rear gears you have now if they are spinning at a good speed on the highway....and you also will need a different/shortened driveshaft for the 700 to work...

Does any know roughly what it would cost to get a driveshaft shortened? Or better yet one that would work from a junker truck? I think if I replace this thing I am just going to get a 700r4 with a tubular crossmember. I dont care so much about the rear gears because I am going to switch them out to get a posi within a year or so.

looks like we might be going to the 700r4... (-: Found out its only 80 bucks to have the driveshaft shortened.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Don't be too quick to give up on the turbo 350 if the leaks are the only major problem. The pan leak can be fixed with a good new felpro gasket (not a local parts store cork gasket) and a good gasket sealant (again brand name, gasket maker, less flex the better, looking for basically the effect of 2 gaskets by having your felpro and the one you apply.

Also, get the White Shepherd brand transmission stop leak and run a batch through, the stuff works if you follow the directions.

A messy day of messing with this may solve the problem and it's a lot easier / less expensive than swapping transmissions.

yea I have thought about that but itshifts into 2nd as soon as you hit the gas. It also has a ton of metal grit in the bottom of the pan. I already replaced the gasket and adde high temp ryv silicon to the pan. The dipstick looks to be jb welded up and the tailshaft leaks at the speedo cable and also the set screw that holds that is stripped. The kick down cable is also jacked up. Also the po said the trans was giving him issues. I figure I might as well do it right and the way I want it. I don't want to put a ton of time and money in this one when I know it's going to be a lost cause.

(-; I have been taking a little break on working on the truck just because I dont want to get burn out but it hasnt kept me from shopping.

This is my other project.. I am getting ready to tear it down for the winter and weld on tank extensions, add a dakota digital speedo and smooth out the dash.

I know its not my truck but its another project so I thought I post a pic.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Hey,... I was just checking out your pics.
Everything looks good,... but you gotta do something with the rear shock angles. They can't be working at all.

I know you mentioned the frame being a "cut down lwb frame",... but something looks off here.
I wonder how they modified the frame?

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

I know what you are saying.. It looks like they just hacked the frame around the cab area.. and just bolted the crossmember to a new location.. I dont think it would change the shock angle but I hope to be able to compare some stuff when I get it running and looking at another frame.
Its not going to matter a ton because i am going to air ride it.. I am thinking of buying the porterbuilt economy rear they have.. Its like 700 bucks but it comes with everything you need including a new shock mount.

I do think that picture looks a little off. Its not that bad looking in person.. I just wonder if they cut the frame and cut to much then pushed the trailing arms back to compensate so the wheelbase was right. thus angling the shocks. However the Springs look to be sitting right so who knows. I also measured the wheelbase and from the best I can tell it is 115 inches hub to hub which I believe is what they are suppose to be. CoRRECT?

Also the truck has McGuaghys SP? springs in the back so it is lowered which will throw that angle off.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

Here is a different picture.. The angle does not look as bad here. If its off I dont think its off by much.. All the factory rivets are still in the rear of the frame so I know they only cut it in half by the cab and bed right in front of the first bed mount.

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

If you look at that spring it does look a little bit cocked back towards the rear of the truck.. I wonder if I just need to rebolt my trailing crossmember a .5 or inch more towards the front of the truck.. I might be buying the pb one anyway.. for 250 bucks its a great deal and then I can run my exhaust through.. That all depends if I sell you my harley LOL

Here is the only picture I have that shows mine. Its not much help but it shows where it's located in the frame. Guess I was to excited tearing it down to take many pictures. LOL

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

It's hard to tell in the pics.
The wheelbase should be 115 for a swb truck,... so that is correct.
I don't see any welds or splices behind the cab,... so they must have done it under the cab, which is the correct way to do it.
Is your trailing arm crossmember still riveted in or bolted in?

I think a pair of ECE rear shock relocators would stand the shock up more vertically.

And,... unless I win the lottery,... I won't be getting a Harley any time soon, even though I really like yours!

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

That would help.. If its way off it might change my decision on how I want to do the rear.. meaning I might just go for the gusto and do it right.

or just get another actual swb frame.. I know the guy in Pittsburgh ks had one for sale not long ago.. HMMM if I only didnt owe 69cst-v money haha

Re: PROJECT LOW DOUGH -1967 shortbed

No the trailing arm crossmember is bolted in.. The cut was made just after it so it would have had to move to compensate for the cut. From what I have read this is the right place to cut it.. Now they didnt do a angle cut or reinforce it. It is just a straight cut and weld but I will weld it up better in the near future.
