Re: My '53 project - Dime time
I'm still debating on doing the clr. I wonder how long it would last if left alone, will the rust come back very fast?

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
I think most of the ones on HAMB get a flat clear coat after the CLR application to keep the rust from coming back.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
I got a little done this week. Can’t do too much with everyone’s schedule so any little time I get I take advantage of it. First got the s10 frame in the shed and cut off the brackets. I like the brackets that 62chevyII’s doing on his second build so going to save them.
Saturday I got the ’53 in the shed for a little tear down and clean up. I was a little afraid of what I might find under all the crap on the floor. We had 2 major floods here in my area in ’93 and ’95. This truck was in them both with water up to the windshield. I was quite surprised that the floor was in good shape. Most bolts came right off without any spray. So now beds off and time to start picking up again so that’s all I got done. Did find some rust but not too bad. This side was the worst.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
Anyone else have helper springs under thier truck like this. From the look of where they make contact to the frame it looked like they were used alot.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
Nate you'll like the original color under the hood. Sure looks like it would match your truck.

Here is the top of the seat. It shows that water was over it at one point.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
There is a junkyard in Booneville river bottoms across the river from the casino, Johnny Barnes He had a lot of old stuff till 93,His building had water marks at 8 ft. He had some 50's and a bunch of 60s trucks and 2 60's suburbans and smashed all of it, it was sad to see.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
Very humid here today so the concrete in the shop was soaking wet. Didn't want to be crawling around on it to start my mounts so I made this. Made my portaband saw into a vise mount band saw. I've been wanting to buy or make one and had some metal so I went for it. Should work good for small fab work.

Nice tool. Way better than the tiny little plate that comes on them.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
Well we have a tractor down so not enough room to get my '53 in to work on it. So I've been working on another tool. I'm putting a motor on my beadroller. It's a little over kill, but most of the stuff was here in the shop. Here's the pics. If interested I'm going to have my blueprints on the bay for $$$$$ so don't copy my pics.

Nice save GRIMSS. I like the 47-53's. If I ever do another I may look at these years also. It makes it nice that it is part of your family.

xpickup, how did you power yours? I was looking for a cheap motor that could handle a load and came up with this cheap harbor freight winch. Did you use a belt or something else? Kind of wondering if it will slip. One last thing how did you handle the motor speed?

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
GRIMSS. Yes I used the harbor Frieght winch. I used chain sprockets from McMaster Carr so they do not slip. I bought the 110 volt unit because I wanted use household current instead of a battery or a battery charger. The rollers run at about 23 inches a minute so it isn't to fast that you can't control. I made a die for the profile of the beltline on the AD trucks and it will do it in a single pass. The next thing you will want to do with your bead roller is to stiffen up the top by adding extra metal. It may spread apart if you do large beads or flanges. My buddy has a Eastwood one and it does it. Let me know if you need any more info.

Re: My '53 project - Dime time
Thanks, I looked at the sprokets, but didn't have the size that was guessing I needed to slow it down. Adding metal was next on my list as I had seen that it was the next problem.
Were are you making your die's? I was thinking about a shearing die.
