Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
Just yesterday, I was behind a square-body suburban, with a Michigan tag in the left rear window. This vehicle was/is a rust bucket. The rear doors are resting on the rear frame rails. The bumper is off. On the back doors is a cheap come-a-long. One hook is in the left hinge and the other end is in the right hinge. I think it is actually there for structual reasons....thinking the back of body is trying to spread apart without that come-along. In order to keep the cable from slapping the body, there's two rubber straps that are stretched from the frame rail, over the cable and back down.....one on each door. I'm thinking that there are no body supports existing. The suburban has a lean....from front to back...and from right to left. But, it didn't smoke and the brake lights worked.
I've got to get a pic of that truck.....

Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
In college I swapped out the leaf springs in my GMC cause one of the leafs had broken at the center bolt. I had to cut off the old u-bolts and had new ones made. Well the new ones were about 1/2" too long so I couldn't tighten the nuts up enough to get everything sinched together. So I cut out a wood spacer to get me to work and to the spring shop to get slightly shorter springs.
In my jeep, I was four wheeling on some narly trails and broke the panhard bar mount off the axle. Well there was no way a tow truck was going to get any where close to where I was, and I didn't know anyone with a welder on a truck capable of getting to where we were. "Luckily" I had some rachet straps with me, and I criss crossed them to locate the axle under the frame. I still had to finish the trail, so I had to leave the straps slightly loose, so the tires were rubbing on the inner wheel wells at points. Once we finished the trail, we had 3 guys sit on the back and I racheted the straps down real tight and drove about 30 miles to an off road shop to have it welded back up. At 50mph you really couldn't even tell Not something I'd really suggest doing though. |

Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
Had a fan blade come off my 70 chevy with a 250 6cyl and auto .I was an hour from home with a load of house hold stuff on the back. The fan blade hit the battery and cut a gash in it also cut the clamp on the post. It also cut the trans cooling line into on its way to denting my nice straight hood. The water pump broke completely at the bearing but it didn't leak . To get it going I pulled the broken fan blade an threw as far as I could ,filed the broken trans line into and repaired it with a couple of clamps and part of the hose for the pcv . Plugged the hole in the battery with bubble gum. Put the battery cable on with vice gripes remove the belts and drove it another mile to get safely off the road. I was lucky enough to get parts on a Sunday . It ended up messing the harmonic balancer up and the flex plate cracked after that from the motor being out of balance before getting it stopped. And to add insult to injury I got the worst case of seed ticks that I have ever had unloading the truck. I wish that I still had that truck it was easy to work on.

One I saw several years ago. Double frame, plywood spacers/shims.
After I took these shots, I saw someone actually driving it on the streets

Was having trouble with the trailer light connection on an 84 F350 I had at the time. Started looking at the rear harness and found 21 splices made in the 5 wires. Why use an existing connection when you can just cut in another.

Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
Nothing comes to mind on my current trucks....but years ago I was driving an old 1956 International S120 4x4 truck with a small block chevy engine in it. The center of the waterpump pulley broke completely out while I was driving around Mesa Verde National Park. Needless to say, there was not any place to get it repaired in the park. I ended up taking off the hood (simple because of the dual release design of it) and putting it in the bed of the truck. I carried a lot of spare parts and tools so I was able to use a short belt from the crank pulley up to the alternator. At least I had a charging system. I then bolted the fan directly to the waterpump. With the hood off, there was enough air movement while driving to turn the waterpump. I was able to drive into the next town and found an old wrecking yard with the pulley I needed. Fun trip.
I also had an accelerator cable break on an old Volkswagen that I had. I took some string and tied the throttle half way open and was able to get the thing home...slowly....

Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
cool i can play here...even tho its not my chevy i used chevy parts to fix it.. in my 69datsun 521... it was dark i was on my way to a friends house in the middle of nowhere.. and my alternator quit me i had no clue all day, until the motor quit running and i had no power... i was sad at this point.. i carry lots of "extra" tools and parts with me.. so i was thinking what can i do to fix this now... i luckly had a chevy a/c delco 1 wire in the bed.. i thought hmm.. i can do it i removed all of the datsun jap crap.. and managed to make a CHEVY alternator work on my datsun.. then pushed it to get it started.. i think this was a total win on my part.. i saved my datsun with chevy parts.. and got an upgrade to boot... i know some people are like PICS or GTFO... so here is my fix and one of the datsun..

My 2000 olds shifter button broke off one day(i was playing with it and it ended up in my hand) so i ground a notch in it at the the end then put a rubber band in the notch and around the shifter to hold in it so it didnt fall out dont have pictures now but will try to get some as soon as possibe.

Re: Lets see you jimmy rigs, quick fixes, and all around funny mods!!!
Unfortunantly I do not have a pic of it, but when I got my truck, the PO had installed a solinoid on the right inner fender and ran to the solinoid on the starter. The positive battery cable ran thru it and the ignition wire ran thru it and then both went to the starter. At first I thought the solinoid on the starter must be bad, but it worked just fine. I removed the one on the inner fender and have not had any problems. Any one have a guess as to why this may have been installed?
