Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I think its almost completely impossible unless you were to live without any modern things. Even then It would be hard unless you made everything yourself. Most clothing is made elsewhere. Most parts on vehicles are made elsewhere. It might say made in USA but its highly likely not everything was. I dont know that theres one piece of commonly used electronic equipment thats not made elsewhere.Everyone wants cheap goods and high wages but thats just not feasible. As everyone is quickly finding out.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I really don't think it is a bad thing to trade with other countries..(I don't know if there should be limits with some countries).Perhaps greed is one cause of saturating our country with foriegn products.I also believe I can live less with modern technologies.(this computor thing is killing me.lol.)Not sure where it is made but,I would love to toss my cell phone into the trash.
Trading with others peoples is not a new concept..its been happening through out time.

haha, true.

We have a guy come into our store (bed bath and beyond) and just looks for American made items while his wife shops. As far as I know he's only found 1-2 items, maybe.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I buy all the US made I can.Even if it means not buying anything and fixing what's broke, like GM trucks.I buy used things and have a house full of vintage, antiques, hand made by craftsmen, and self-made.You can have furniture reupholstered locally.I don't play into the "it'll cost what a new one is to fix this" game, either. My reply is,"Fix it and keep it out of the landfill".We are burying ourselves in US made discards while replacing with cheap foreign crap.I don't shop for entertainment nor does my gal.I am self-employed which make what I do an American product.I feel very passionate about the constitution and try to preserve it's intent through my actions.Freedom of enterprise is abused by the coming of huge corporations that in 1776 could not be imagined.Greed always finds a way to manipulate to reach it's goal and we now are paying the cost of allowing too much power into too few hands.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

Let's be careful to avoid straying into domestic politics. The discussion on global economics and the effect on product safety is valuable and productive so let's try to stay out of any prohibited sand boxs.

The reasons for the differences in the cost of many products are numerous and complex. As parents I think we need to be aware of the times when those cost differences are caused, in part, by laxer product safety standards.

There are too many expenses in life to stand on principal when you have children, but product safety is not a principal I think I can waver on with my children so I'll buy cheaper clothes (frequently imported) but I'm going to avoid Chinese made toys and housewares until China's product safet record is closer to ours.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

Whats wrong with domestic politics being discussed? When "too much power in too few hands" is a real threat then its of no value to continue ignoring the elaphant in the room in order not to rock the boat. If the boat is begining to show ANY signs of capsizing then the crew looks for the problem, they don't ignore it and hope it gets better on its own!

My english teachers would have loved all those over used phrases

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

I try to avoid foreign products, but it is really hard. But then again, some items made over seas are much higher quality than what you can have made in the states dollar for dollar. Here is an example. I sell Valair clutches. The owner tried for 2 years to main stream his dual disc clutches in the USA and could not accomplish his goal. By the time he would have had a clutch and flywheel produced in the states, and be able to sell it, it was going to cost him twice as much as his competition's. He worked a deal with his sister company that owns a machining facility in China, and that is where all his parts are machined, or made. They are all shipped here tested for metal purity and quality and assembled in Texas. The steel and products used to make the parts have to pass all the same tests as here in the US to be able to be sold here in the US. He sources most of the parts from in the US and Canada, but facings are only made over seas for the most part anymore. Basically, there are companies out there still trying to produce quality products while still trying to keep everything made in the USA. But it is so hard to do most large corporations don't do it because it effects the bottom line. I highly doubt we could ever operate with out foreign made items the way things are now.

I usually don't have a snobbish view with products not made here.I don't have a problem with putting a foriegn made stereo in my truck..(Infact I put a radiator in my 72 that was made in Mexico. That was 5 years ago and it is fairing very well)I will however prefer to use NOS when I can find it.
I think the safety issues are things I would be more concerned with regaurding this discussion.

Re: Dont buy Chinese!!!!

Not buying Chinese products will never happen. Do you really expect people to stop buying personal computers, cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, HDTV's, etc? Come on, get real... I bet over 99% of ALL these products are manufactured in China.

The only way to keep the crappy junk out (Low quality steel, lead based paint, tainted foods, etc) is for the companies that import these products to be held accountable. Whether the importer is a U.S. company or a Chinese company, they need to be the ones responsible for the quality and safety of the products they are bringing into our country. Until this happens, nothing will change.

What consumers should do when they purchase sub-standard imported products is file a complaint with the import company and demand their money back. Also report the issue to the local consumer protection groups, and perhaps even the Federal Trade Commission. Make your federal government step up to the plate and put a stop to this crap.

But no, people just sit back in thier easy chairs and post 'don't buy Chinese products' threads on internet forums using their made in China computer.
