The auction listed it as having factory "cruise control" also.
Is that correct?
I saw your grandfathers truck at the local Chevrolet dealership a few years ago.
It was inside getting a tune up.
My buddy works there and did the repairs to it.

What are your plans for it?

Nice truck. You seem like a reasonable guy w/a good head on your shoulders. Leave this piece of history alone; no mods, no wild repaints, no lowering, no cutting holes in the dash and/or the doors etc etc. There's plenty of trucks out there that have already been cobbled up by people who don't know what they're doing and have turned perfectly good trucks into piles of parts. They're only original once, and there's not many left.

Factory cruise control was dealer installed in 1978. I found the receipt and manual for it in the glove box. My short-term plans are to stare at it a lot as it sits in my garage.

If you knew me, you wouldn't be worried. It's staying as it is.

I might have a steering wheel that's "a little" better than the one on there.
(I believe the same color, with a few cracks)
If I can find it,... you can have it.

Awesome looking truck, and the history behind it makes it even better. I would do the same thing you are going to do. Sit and stare at it for long periods of time, and then really enjoy driving it, and having the memories of your grandparents close at heart!

Keep in mind, I did pay for the truck. It wasn't given to me. They wanted to keep the peace as far as family goes and succeeded by going this route.

To have my Grandpa's old 65 4x4 would make me cry with joy. - no matter how much it cost. It's still in the family; my uncle has it.

And Grandpas take such great care of their vehicles.

I try and go visit my Grandma in Calif atleast twice a year.

No problem at all.

Looks like I'm going to have to take the inner door panel off to fix the LOCK function on the DS door. None of the tricks suggested worked. I've got a door and window handle removal "tool" which I'm assuming will work on this truck. What kind of clips hold the panel on? I've got the arm rest off. Sure don't want to tweak the panel.

Also, feel free to throw more oil suggestions at me. After doing some research, it would appear Shell Rotella may not be the best choice.

Door tool should work fine. There are kind of "horse shoe" shaped clips that hold the door and window crank handles on. Then there is one screw I believe in the panels at the bottom corner..and the rest are the upholstry "snap" style clips. The door tool will help here.

I appears to be worse than I remembered.
Also the color is off.
(you're still welcome to it,... but your truck deserved a much nicer one)

Our classified section is a great place to find all kinds of nice used parts.
Our board supporting Vendors is also the perfect source, for new or repop items.

Just remember you need to be a supporting member yourself,... to place "want to buy" or "looking for" ads.
(also "What's it Worth" or "For Sale" ads)
You can join for 6 months,... or a year.

If you ever need help,... don't hesitate to ask.

It was by no means fun. I had decided a few days beforehand what my limit was going to be and transferred that amount over to my checking account. I kid you not, I got it for that exact amount. If another person had bid again, they would have driven it home. I wanted the truck but I had to set a limit and not go past it. The heart was pounding a mile a minute. While we're on the subject, I'll tell you another odd story about it. I was looking for a storage place online a few weeks ago for the truck and the first place I clicked on happened to be on a street with the exact last name as my grandparent's. I didn't tell anybody until after the auction. The family got chills hearing that one. I hesitate to even tell the story since it is so eerie. I can't make this stuff up!

Congratulations on a fine looking ride and welcome. As someone said earlier, we're a good and knowledgeable bunch. If you have a question, someone will have the answer.

Regarding oil, I would stay with whatever your grandfather used. Some will say otherwise, but I was always told not to switch oil. Having said that, I recently bought a 72 Chevy. I asked the PO what oil he used, and he said Pennzoil. We'll, I've been a Valvoline guy all my life so guess what in the crankcase today.

I started this thread a few days ago regarding the synthetic/dino debate. There are some very good responses. It may help you make a decision.

Does the key only turn one way or does it turn both ways but doesn't do anything in one direction?
If you roll the window down you can see the lock mechanism with a flashlight. Turn the key back and forth while looking at it. That might give you some idea whats going on with it.
