1972 service station gas pump pictures?

Tokheim was (and probably still is) a manufacturer of gas pumps. I wonder if you googled them if you could find some kind of history or chronology, with period correct pumps shown.

I worked in a couple of Exxon stations in the late sixties through about 71 or 2. I seem to remember the pumps that Vintage Windmills pictured. Both of the stations I worked at were full service - you cleaned the windshield and checked the oil, belts etc. In the late 60's, mini skirts were in vogue. There were a couple of guys who worked at the stations, and when a younger good looking woman came in, we used to race to get to the island so you could be the one to wash the windshield. If I remember correctly, the drivers side of the windshields used to take a long time to clean, most likely due to the view!

As long as we are moving away from 1972ish pumps and showing photos of older equipment, I have one to show.
The story is my father-in-law's dad (my grand-father-in-law?) purchased this pump off the highway department when they were building US highway 75 through their part of the country in 1927. My wife's family used it through the 80s. In the last few years I helped him restore it. When we got done we put it back on the pad his dad put it on in 1927.

It is a Wayne from around 1918.

Best line I ever heard was next to that pump. One of those American Picker's style guys pull in to the place. He is trying REAL hard to purchase the pump. Finally my father-in-law looks him in the eye and says,
"If I sell you the pump I'll spend the money. Then I won't have the pump or the money."

The guy got back in his truck and left.

Sammy, where is/was this gas station? It looks really familiar.

This restored Texaco station is in Desoto, Mo. On North end of Main street across from the RR tracks and repair yard.
On Craigslist I see old pumps for sale every now and then. asking prices $1,000 to $1,300 apparently they are worth a bit of coin.

I see them for 1000-1500 restored myself around this area. I will get a picture of one my father-in-law restored and some of his cars tomorrow if I get a chance.

Since we are on the story telling side of things, I'll tell you what I can remember. My Grandfather and Uncle, my Dad's side and the uncle is also the uncle that used to own my 40 Ford, used to have a service station together. My grandmother had pictures of the station in the early 70's, and the pumps look like the rectangular ones with the white face behind the glass. They sold the station long before I was around so I just hear from the family that wants to talk about it. Both my uncle and grandfather are gone, but my aunt is still around. Last year I took my aunt to a car show that she and my uncle always went to. She would not ride in the car with us, too many memories. She told me that day they never missed the show until he died, and they went for 29 years. I understood why she didn't want to get in the car that day. Anyhow, to get to the point, when we followed her home, we went in to their basement to see if we could find any other parts my uncle may have hidden for the 40. Low and behold there was an old gas pump in there. I asked her about it and she said it was an old pump from Jerry and Russ's station. I couldn't believe it. She told me I could buy it so whenever I get the spare cash, I'm going to go get it. It is a tall rectangular pump with no glass bowl or anything on it. I have no idea what kind it is. But it should be a good piece to have next to the car some day.

In the early 70's when I first started driving Mobil was the dominate brand where I lived. When I first started driving the pumps looked like this:

Then during the 70's they remodeled most of the stations to look like this. Back then they looked futuristic!

My local co-op station used ones like these up untill bout 2 or so yars ago then they went digital and a Sinclair station in a nearby town used ones like these till bout august or so except they had to tape additional numbers in the pump when the gas prices went high

Here's a few pics from my Route 66 trip in June. The first two are of what I remember as 70's era pumps. The last one is a 'restored' tourist trap with way overpriced antiques. The wayne pumps were not replicas and were pretty cool, definitely earlier than 70's, 40's and earlier.

That is before gas went over $1 a gallon. There is only two digits. I remember that transition. We had to adjust our pumps to 1/2 gallon to make up for the lack of digits. IE .56 per half gallon was $1.12 per gallon.

If I had to guess I would say its an AMC Javelin or AMX... but I might have been sniffing glue today.

I wonder if a poll was taken of folks on here, how many of us had worked at a gas station, filling station.....ah, service station. Service is the key. As others have stated, we pumped the gas, wiped the windshield and checked the oil, but offered to check the tires if they needed us to do so. Some of the girls "back in the day" got a lot of extra cleaning on that windshield...wink...wink. But, I remember one customer with a '56 Chevy who stopped once a week and bought 5 gallons of Esso Plus...for $1.65. If it needed oil, another 50 cents got a quart of Esso Extra 30-wt. A girl I dated has a sister who had a '62 Corvair. She bought 50 cents worth of gas and got a quart of oil....regularly.

But, our pumps were nice stainless steel on the outside and top, with porcelain fronts below the computers. Yeah, the devices that converted the flow of gasoline into a price is called a computer. Remember seeing that round "thingy" that spun while the gas was flowing? Tokheim and Wayne are the two manufacturers I remember. But, if you want get into it, Bowser and Gilbarco are a couple more.

I love these old memory joggers.
