Like you I could not even imagine us living any place where it would snow. When the place I worked in northern California, just north of San Francisco, closed we moved back here to the old home place on the farm in the flatlands of Southeast Missouri to help take care of things.

Since we moved back here we have had 2 hundred year floods, many snow storms and of course the Ice Storm of 2009. Such is life, no one ever knows what is in store for them in the future.

I agree. There are certain advantages of a tall narrow M+S tire versus a low profile wide street tire when it comes to M+S (MUD and SNOW). Before 4X4's got super popular, it was common for 2WD pickups in rougher climates to always run narrow M+S tires on rear and highway tread on front. What tire size do you presently have on the rear?

Re: worthless in snow....

Snow tires and ballast with a little common sense will get you through stuff most people wouldn't go into without a 4x4. I drove my 72 12 months a year for 15 years and never got myself into anything I could not get out of. Hard heavy duty tires with no ballast and the truck will be pretty useless in the snow.

yep. that is all I was trying to say. It is so useless I was laughing out loud when I got "stuck" on a flat driveway.

and, yes, after puting 400 pounds in the back I was able to move around a bit better. I was raised in Montana, so im not a novice at driving in the snow.

Re: worthless in snow....

I'm surprised this many people drive their trucks in winter. Up here they salt the roads like crazy and your truck will dissolve in a few years. I suppose most areas don't salt like MN.

Re: worthless in snow....

well I am not going to drive it normally. The truck just arrived from Texas and I have a few things to sort out; then it’s getting zipped up in the new carport. The sight of all the salt sends chills down my spine. Why can’t they just use gravel like Montana lol.

And before Capt. Obvious pipes in, (lots of them on this board), ya, im going to wash it thoroughly before putting it away, ya I know about mice, yes I know about gas stabilizer, and and and…ugh.

Once my truck is finished im driving it in the winter... I have a shop with a pressure washer and i can clean it as much as i want so im not to worried.

Re: worthless in snow....

You all from the snow states have no idea about how stupid people here in Texas are when the fluffy white stuff begins to fall, There might be 3 or 4 people here in North Texas that actually know how to drive in it. Last year we had 12" of the perty stuff all in one day, didnt stick on the roads but made things just a bit slick. Some of these people think the road conditions should change for them, stupid people. Please keep it up there, these people dont have a clue.

Re: worthless in snow....

I took this photo today before I got on the computer, after blowing snow for an hour or so. Yes that is my Jeep, 2000 Cherokee. 4.0 Select-Trac. will go thru about two ft with no problemo. My 71 C20 with no spin is still iffy without chains in the deep stuff.

Re: worthless in snow....

People up here are like that to. When it starts to snow people start thinking that they own the roads and everybody should watch out for them and they drive 15mph in the middle lane an if you try to pass them they pull in front of you to try to stop you from passing(notice i said try). When they do it i just get close to them and push them back into there lane so they get out of the way. If your afraid to drive in these conditions then stay home. Im not saying you should be stupid and ignore the conditions but just because it snows it doesnt mean the rules of the road dont apply anymore and you can block everybody else. It happens all the time...

Re: worthless in snow....

what makes me laugh is people with 4wd who think they are masters of the icy roads. while it is true they can GO better down the road, 4wd does not help you with the stopping part! lol... every car has 4ws (4 wheel stop)...lmao

I'd say more then 3 or 4! Especially with all the yankees moving down here.

But yes.....a good 85-90% of the drivers don't know how to drive in anything frozen...

Re: worthless in snow....

I had to take another look at this thread when I saw it was still going on. Pretty funny.

I think we also have to realize that snow is not snow!!!! It has been snowing all winter here in Bend, OR. You get just one inch in Portland and the town is crippled. The humidity in the air has a lot to do with how slick the snow actually is....whether it's packed or not. In the valley that snow is like the slickest snot you have ever tried to drive on. Out here it's not nearly as bad. I think regardless of the type, you always see the SUV's and the 4x4's on their tops because of what has been stated. False sense of security. "Well 35 mph is not bad......let's run 'er up to 60!!!". "Hey Buford.....get me another beer"....
