Heres a random pic for reference.

I have read that if you go to a gas pump that requires the fume nozzle to be compressed to activate the pump handle it can be a pita to fill a side marker light filler.

I have seen a few round doors here on the forum that were from an S-10, thats what i got from the junk yard, that and a 1 1/2" filler neck as they also have a 1" one that i read to stay away from for slow filling reasons.

I have not installed the door yet but hope to soon, you will need to make a tunnel that goes on the inside of the bed and wall to allow for the filler neck to pass at a decent angle but if ya plan it right it will be a pretty small tunnel, you may also want to modify the filler neck to lessen the angle.

This is what I did for my 67 panel. I don't like the recess for the finger so I decided to go with one from a Plymouth Voyager Van and use a cabe to pop the door open. Here is a link, it's not done yet but it gives you a good idea.

It looks great. I don't have a pic of that but you'll see the result when you look at the way its used in the blazer.

I am a big fan of moving the tank to the rear. More room in the cab . The interior really opens up behind the bucket seats.

I used a Perko filler cap that is vented to the tank for filling and to outside air for running (won't pull a vacuum)
I welded a ¼-20 nut inside my light housing and a fender washer outside. A ¼-20 bolt is my hinge.

The bulb housing was cut out of the lens frame; a back and bushings were welded in place. The bottom is slotted to route wires

This plate was welded in the stake pocket

A 1 ¾” piece of muffler pipe was bent to 90 with one end stretched to 2” to match the filler on my fuel cell. A piece of 1-1/2” muffler pipe was welded in the other end to match my filler neck.

A push/pull cabinet hinge was used to hold it closed and open it.


I’ll need to drop my FCG tank ~1” to keep filling downhill.


I still have some trimming to do and I’ll close up my stake pocket. I’ll also weld my 90 in to keep things from rubbing.

Wes that filler cap looks great, maybe i'll think about getting one.

Also per the taillight filler, it does require some trimming of the structural supports so if your going to hual stuff in the bed its something to concider also.

Thank you.. It came to me when I was scouting wrecking yards for ideas... That was when I had time to go to them.. I think that it fits the bill perfectly. Not too large, not too small... and best of all no finger groove. WES

There was a blue fleetside on the board with that setup. The owner used a stainless boat flush mount filler cap if I remember correctly. It looked real nice! I can't remember whose it was but I'm sure someone will chime in.

There are several guys on here that have the filler in the top of the bed rail, I can not remmber their screen names though. Here are a few pics i have saved on my computer from someone on the forum, I'm sure someone will recognize the truck.

Nice work tinkerdad, yours is alot like mine. I think it was John Fabris that made the nice stake pocket filler. For a hidden filler, I like the side marker light option too, but I think if I went that route, I would use the Hagen cap that doesn't require it to be removed to fill your tank. Here is mine.

Huggercst and tinkerdad, those both look great and look to be very functional. One question though, what holds the light in the "up" position, and how do you lower it when you want to fill up?

Mine has a spring attached to the side of the leans backing plate. That spring is mounted at an angle so that it cams over and holds it open, or closed. I simply push on the bottom of the lens to open it.

Mine has a magnetic cabinet latch in the upper right hand corner. When you push on the top it pops out. You can then pull it down.

One comment or concern that was brought up in a different thread that i was reading that i have not seen here is that some folks have been a bit concerned about the possibility of sparks, bad wire or connection and gas fumes after filling. I cant speak first hand of this but thought at least you should be aware of it if you do a light filler mod be it ether tail light or rear marker..

Yeah I thought about that too. Mixing electrical and gas fumes could end badly. I plan to convert the tail lights to led and because the light will be hinged the harness will need to be redone anyway so all connections will be soldered and all wires will be incased in an abrasive resistant jacket. There will be a plug where the new harness connects into the existing harness but this plug will be located under the truck far away from the filler neck.

It doesn't hurt to take the extra steps to avoid a possible issue!
