Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

It is funny that people will give $2,000 for a truck ,and then put $18,000 in it to make it a really nice truck. But they wont pay $20,000 for a really nice truck. I have done the same thing.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

I agree that it all depends on what they are worth in your area. Out here that truck would be sold in a day even if it is worse than it appears. Shortbeds here are way overpriced and sell quick. If it was me I'd request a lot of pics of the entire windshield area and floor pan inside and out, cab supports, corners, etc so you have a good idea of what you'd be taking on. Sheet metal work is time consuming but can be done fairly cheap. What condition is the motor in?

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Looks amazing from a distance but as I dig into my own truck (which doesn't have half the rust that one does) I think all the work its going to take getting that rust off is not worth 2000. Better to get a 1000 dollar truck with no rust. My truck has that super thick second coat of paint too and its a pain to get off. With only a stripper to work with its taking me about 5 hours a panel of sanding, and thats just the outer part that I'm painting to make it look half decent (its a work truck so Im not even taking the panels off to paint.)

I agree with dan42! I see alot of money to be spent to make that truck a desent truck. The doors are mixedmatched yrs and the pass.front fender is bent up on the bottom front, not to mention the RUST, was it a running truck and how long ago was it running? Just so much to concider in buying a old truck like our's! Best of luck but choice wisely my friend..........$$$$$$$

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

IMO it maybe worth it depending on your area and how well of a truck you are wanting. if you are wanting just one to drive and have fun with and not a total show truck or perfect conditions then it would be worth just slapping together and fixing the major area's just to have a decent driver.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Thanks for the advise guys, all (ok almost all) good points. The truck is in Fyffe, AL near Birmingham if anyone wants to go have a look. I asked how stuck he is on the price and he says he's pretty firm, he thinks the bed is worth $1500 alone. As I have mentioned before I have a deal struck on a '70 cab, fenders, and bed all on a '73-'87 chassis for $1000 and the cab and bed are supposedly cherry. I really want the truck to have a correct frame so that is why I have continued to look. It would be great if I could find a '71-'72 chassis (disk brakes/5 lug) to put the sheet metal on but I haven't found anything in northwest florida yet. I am really ready to get started on a truck, but I guess my budget and location aren't helping me. I'm thinking I'll pass on this one and keep my eye out for others. Thanks again guys!

I wouldn't buy anything that doesn't wear the original paint. There is way too much to hide with cheap paint jobs now a days. It is just too hard to know what you are getting yourself into. I can almost guarantee there is Bondo in that roof and to do it right you will probably have to replace the roof skin...just my $.02...

i say if u aalready have the option on another cab offer him 1800 and go for it. that truck already has 5lug and power brakes the bed looks nice as well as the clip.
combine the this truck with the other cab and sell all the rest to recoup some of the cost and keep building....
its your truck build it the way u want it and have fun with it !!

I assume 2K is close to his/her limit. And it also looks like they're looking for a project.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Rust will be a big problem with a 2K budget. But you can get lucky if you wait long enough.

If you don't wanna wait, I suggest avoiding rust near window trim. Rust on the floor can be easy to repair, and always check the lower side of the doors for rust/bondo.

GL with searching. Post up when you have a winner.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

Since it's been resprayed, has mis-matched parts, etc. make sure you get a picture of the spid and compare all the VIN numbers...it might not be an original short box. Just cover all your bases is all.

personally, I think it's worth $2K if that guy puts it back together for you and meets you half-way...

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

The 2k budget is just to get started. It looks like I have found a swb frame to go with the other '70 cab/bed I found. If the frame deal works out I am going to go with the solid cab/bed and build from there.

Re: Is this '70 worth $2000?

I say make an assessment of the parts that you would actually use and then look in the classifieds here and determine what its worth.
No doors are the same as doors that are too rusty to use......is the frame straight? Does it have the differential ratio that you want to run? Brake components good, or do they need to be replaced? Is the bed good enough to bolt on or is bondo hiding poor repairs?
Point is that it is only worth what is usable, not what is included in the sale. I had a great 71 super longbed that was fine as a truck, (drove good, ran good, etc) but when I looked at it with what I would have actually used in a resto, there just wasnt much there. The doors were rusty on the bottoms, it was a wrongbed and I wouldnt use the 350 turbo (700R4 instead) so I sold it as a truck and they NO is still just driving happy.
Looks like a $800 to me. I wouldn't drive 10 hours to look if it was me. JMO

For 2,000 you should be able to find a runner...only buy it if you need certain parts...that you would end up spending more for...negotiate with cash in hand...
