Re: muffler choice?
I run Full length headers, into a 3" Y pipe into a single 2 chamber flow turneddown just before the axle, has a nice little grunt and not loud. Even though loud is subjective.
A lot quiter than my LS1 w/cam an long tubes and no muffler |

Re: muffler choice?
I am running a factory exhaust on my truck. The Spin Techs gives me that "deep" BB sound but not to loud that it gives you a headache driving tdown the road. Then again having a BB 402 helps.

Re: muffler choice?
I love flowmaster 40s. Have them on both my trucks. However if I wanted to go quiet at idle and party with the pedal down I would choose ss borlas. I put them on my bosses hemicuda I built and it sounds sweet. You may have heard it on the season three bullrun show. Alot of people liked the way it sounded. They look good and sound good what more could you want. lol

Re: muffler choice?
This is my set up on my truck loved the sound for a while. But take a long road trip and I start thinking I need to do something about it.

Re: muffler choice?
If your system ends up being a little louder than you care to listen to, another option is to put inserts in your headers. These can be bought through Jeg's, Summit, and other vendors. Just drop the pipes at the headers, insert the pieces and bolt it back together. When run with loud mufflers they do a lot to eliminate the resonating pulses at lower rpm.

Re: muffler choice?
I have longtube headers, true dual, and 2.5" flowmaster 40s. The mufflers are mounted under the front of the bed and are dumped (no tailpipes or turndown). I think it sounds good, but from what you want I don't think it would be for you because of the raspy sound. If you want smooth sound I would suggest magnaflow or something similar. I have a magnaflow on my 01 tahoe and it is deep and relatively quiet at cruise, then you get on it and it really livens up.
Heres clip of my 68 with Flowmasters, the rev is to about 4000 RPM (sorry you can't see anything it was raining so I set the camera under the bed). And here is a clip of my tahoe, I know it has a different engine and catalytic converter so it doesn't sound the same, but you can get a feel for what magnaflows sound like. I'm not sure why I can't get the player to show up on the screen, but I guess the image takes you to the clips.....sorry

Re: muffler choice?
oh man I got to totally agree on this. I have had so many other style mufflers and when I got magnaflows that did it for me and got me hooked fast, Especially when the foot hits the floor.

Re: muffler choice?
I had my exhaust re-done last summer. I told the guy I wanted the biggest quietest mufflers I could get, and to run the pipes all the way to the bumper. After twelve years I was tired of the sound of the flotech turbos. It's Cadillac quiet now. Literally. My rumble used to set off alarms. Now they don't hear me coming.

Nice, I sometimes think about doing that to my burb. I personally like to hear my motor, than to hear an obnoxious exhaust system on an otherwise mostly stock motor.

Re: muffler choice?
I was a big fan of the Dyno Max Superturbos for yrs....a good flowing muffler, that ran mellow@ idle & low revs .....till you stepped on the loud peddle! Last trip, I wanted something more aggressive, & tryed a set of 40's flows. I could not get with the drone in the cab & the tailpipes exited under the back bumper! I tryed a set of 50's Flows, & I like em....nice rumble down low,no drone on the hyway.....& they are about as beligerent as the 40's when I stand on that loud peddle (I am a mid 50's teenager crazyAL
